Gas Pedal Stuck Empty
PostSubject: Gas Pedal Stuck   Gas Pedal Stuck EmptySun Dec 15, 2013 11:18 am

So fun story from last night. I had parked my SS over the weekend at a family member's house and went to pick it up last night. Started her up and let her sit for a few minutes to warm up. I back up and out the driveway and head down the street and not maybe 50 yards do I notice that when I lift my foot off the gas to brake, that the gas pedal was sticking. I foolishly pumped the gas to get it to unstick but that just gave it more throttle. Needless to say I start barreling down the street.

I quickly threw the car in neutral and parked her on the side of the street. Mind you, the car is pegged at around 5500 rpm. I killed the ignition and got out to inspect the pedal. I definitely was "frozen" to the floor, though I was able to pull the pedal back. I started the car back up and the engine was still revving high. Pop the hood to inspect the throttle cable and it was not frayed and was still connected. At that point I called AAA to get a tow a few miles to my house. She is now parked under a foot of snow.

My next step is to clean out the throttle body just in case. But I had one thought: I have notice the trans hesitating/slipping from 1st to 2nd for a few months and have meant to get that looked at thinking it might be the TV cable. It may be possible this is related, but I wanted to get input first from you guys. What do you think?

Pedals on these cars are really simple. And ad far as I know lt1/4l60e doesn't have a TV cable.
I would start the car with the hood open and manually rev the engine at the throttle body to see what's going on.. Sounds like the spring for the throttle plate is getting stuck open. Disconnect the throttle cable from the pedal and from the throttle body and see if it slides back and forth freely through the sheath.

A couple thoughts come to mind.
Kinked throttle cable
If you did a tb bypass, the throttle could have become iced up.
Dirty tb
Malfunctioning cruise control module
Also, if the tb position sensor takes a dump, it will over rev the engine until it is replaced. But this is usually around 2400 rps, not over 5 grand.
When off, can you pull the gas pedal up with your hand?

Gas Pedal Stuck Empty
PostSubject: Re: Gas Pedal Stuck   Gas Pedal Stuck EmptySun Dec 15, 2013 2:02 pm

Just finishing clearing the driveway. Before I started I cleaned the car off and started her up, first check the pedal position, which was normal. Car started fine and idled normally. I let her sit and warm up for the 20-30 minutes it takes me to clear the driveway, etc.  I feathered the pedal and even hit it up to 3000 RPM, all seemed fine. Letting off the gas pedal, it always returned to its normal position.

I also checked the cable again, though not to the extent you guys advised; its too cold and I'm a sally. I will leave it in a buddy's shop tomorrow and check it after work where it is warm.

Throttle body was some dirty on this thing. Throttle plate was caked with carbon deposits and grime. I cleaned it up and double checked the cable. Car idles much better.
