PostSubject: Parking brake problems   Wed Nov 06, 2013 6:09 pm

94 Roadie...

I depressed the parking brake before jacking up the car today (to change out rotted control arms, no such luck with that). Thought afterwards "bad idea. New England car".

Well, I was right. Tonight while releasing said parking brake, the pedal just falls back down and turns the light on again.

Anybody run in to this and have a solution?

Thanks.

Ya...your screwed.....Razz

In my case, the cable between the pedal & the tensioner had worn thru the sleeve & rust swelled to failure.
It was easy for me to replace because I had the DS wheelwell out...wouldve been slightly harder fully assembled.
You need to find out what part of the assembly is not returning.
If your lucky you can pull it back into "normal" position with visegrips & the proper angle.
Did your brakes engage? there are 3 cables to the system, 1 failure will cause your pedal issue.
Once they freeze up your pretty much screwed.
There was 1 cable that wasnt as easy to get as the others.
Good luck

Sooooooo screwed meaning can't fix it or what?

This isn't really anything I want to hear after owning car for 4 days.

Can't get it inspected now. No exhaust either. I'm pretty much fucked.

It can be fixed.
I assume you want to keep the $ to a minimum...so....find which of the 3 cables requires attention.
I'm sure spraying PC blaster & working the inner cable back & forth has freed up the marginally bound cables before.
I just never have any luck with that method. If it works, oil the bejeezus out of it & your good to go.
If all else fails, buy the cable (s) required R&R the system, adjust & go

Thanks. I'll spray the hell out of it all when its not raining. Car "has" to be inspected by tm. I guess that's not happening.

I'd just bring it to a shop & have them bandaid it until you get the parts.

If your not gawd-awful loud and your brake kinda works....they wont flunk you.

Worst case

I've never had a rejection sticker before but it'll buy you time anyway

That won't be the case. The parking pedal clicks back down to engage no matter what.

Ask Matt. The exhaust sounds like a gasser or rat rod. No intermediate pipe or muffler on the passenger side. Drivers side is all cut up too.

Guaranteed to fail.

Can't speak for the exhaust since we know what it is, but can those cables just be cut for now and replaced later? I can't remember the last time my parking brake was checked at inspection, however they do work(ed) so that's probably why of course.

My parking brake just blew up in the Tahoe, have to order the parts tonight since Amazon starts charging us sales tax tomorrow...

Steve is right, btw. You could get a rejection sticker to drive it until you get the new exhaust on. It's loud, but more inside the car than outside unless you're flooring it. I know my brother drove that car for months with it like that and no one ever bothered him, FWIW...

Na. It'll just sit before I make any hasty rudiculous and costly decisions to get a R sticker.

You can drive on a black R for a while but a RED R for safety is supposed to be parked until fixed. A cop looking to give a ticket will instantly stop you/ have you tow the car home.
Ive had it happen numerous times.

Same issue that happened in the black caddy. E brake pedal would just fall to the floor. After that I started greasing the shit out of my e brake systems.

Exactly. Lets not forget, I was a patrolman and did exactly what Indy just said. Its not so much "looking to give a ticket" as much as it is seeing a car with a flagged safety hazard, driving around with the potential of causing harm or death to the driver, occupants, or other motorists who are none the wiser. The officer does not know what the R is for when he runs that plate. Just that it says "inspection? Yes" "Last inspection result? FAIL"

So I won't be doing any of that. Especially with a toddler on board. Makes it worse.

You can probably get out of this for under 100 bucks...

That whole 7 days thing has never really mattered to me or anyone else I know. I've actually had friends who buy cars with a good sticker and run it like that until it expires.

Just do the e brake, put an old muffler box in the backseat and go to a gas station inspection station and say you just bought the car and need to get it on the road, but the muffler shop is closed until Monday morning.

Lol.

Thanks for the link Matt.

I could, and maybe I can't.

The exhaust shop is waiting on the pipes to come in (cheapest route) and I'm saving the custom OTA pipes and tips to save more money.

The e brake thing is the most PITA thing about it. Its nobodies fault. Not even the car. I'll rebuild everything eventually. But I need to drive it to the shop for the exhaust and then my buddies house 4 houses down to do the control arms.

I don't give an F about the 7 day sticker garbage. But I can't just drive it around like that either. $50 ticket PLUS 3 year surcharge on insurance for no sticker. I gave those out too. Can't be a hypocrite anyway.

Just need some info, some parts, and some time to make it right.

This toadmaster will be sweet when I'm done with it. Its 90% clean underneath and the guts are super nice minus the drivers seat cushion skin.

This has tons of potential. Just buying it this time of year isn't the best time. I'll be going for a two tone look with nice rims once I fix the quarters and swap the A pillar things to 95/96 mirrors.

Fingers crossed.

I gave her a good lube job underneath today and it seems as tho I've freed up that cable.

Time will tell.

Thanks to those who replied.
