PostSubject: Major oil leak   Sat Jul 04, 2009 10:02 pm

I managed to lose 5 quarts of oil in about 3 months. My slow leaks have developed into small gushers and I don't know what I'm tackling. I need to know everything on the passenger side of an L99 that has oil passing through it. My major leak is down low on the passenger side but I can't pinpoint it because of the mess.

There's an upside down triangular thing that looks like some sort of sensor that seams to be the biggest culprit, but I don't even know what it is to be able to fix it. I know I've seen this thing attatched to Tim's engine harness during the swap which is why I think it's a sensor of some kind. I can see it when I jack up the car and it's on the passenger side of the engine rearward of the motor mount.

The dipstick tube I can't get at from the right angle to check thanks to my lovely parking situation.

If there's a knock sensor on that side could that be leaking oil?

The driverside is clean and the rear of the engine seams as clean as can be expected. It's deffinetly coming from the passenger side.

And yes the front seal leaks but that's a battle for another day Rolling Eyes

Sounds like you're seeing the knock sensor. That would leak coolant, not oil.

Could be valvecover gasket or intake manifold gasket. What about the tranny cooler lines?

It's deffinetly oil. The tranny cooler lines were already patched a couple years ago and still look good.

I hope it's not the intake manifold or head leaking. Either way I might end up asking for help if it's anything more than the dipstick tube or valve cover.

The intake is common and not that bad a job. There's no coolant in it, and no distributor, so it's pretty simple.

yeah, forgot about the dipstick tube.

I'm sure the intake wouldn't be that bad. My car would be in your driveway and I'd sit down with lunch and watch the master at work Laughing

There isn't one. Just the dipstick, knock sensor and coolant temp sensor in the head on that side.

Well today I gave it a quick grab and feel exam and the dipstick tube is caked in fluid at the bottom. I'm assuming it is one of the leaks, but I'm not sure that it is the entire problem. Later today I'm going out to do a more thorough inspection.

Side note, how do I replace the tube gasket without breaking the tube? I don't even know how the tube attatches.

There is no gasket. The tube is pushed about 2.5 inches into the block.
The tube can be removed by getting underneath and removing one 3/8 bolt that holds the bracket to the block.
Now just pull assembly up and out

You can put a small bead of permatex around the stop on the tube before reassemble to give it a gasket if it is leaking there.

I'm sure it's easier said than done, but thanks for the info. I'll tackle that next week when I get the chance.

Update...it's too hot in the sun to mess around with the car today. I tried to do the tb bypass just so I could get something accomplished but the hose decided it didn't feel like moving and I gave up for now. Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter so maybe on Tuesday I'll get something done with the car.

I have a side not that I'll throw out there. I had to replace the evap hose coming off the TB while I had everything apart and noticed something odd. My TB hose goes to the bottom port in the solenoid not the top one like in this pic
Is that a problem?

i think the F-body solenoid is different. There is a mark on the solenoind; "Can" goes to the canister.

PostSubject: Re: Major oil leak   Sun Jul 05, 2009 5:36 pm

My car is the only one in the household running right now. So I have a couple hours from when the car finally cools off until when I need to be cleaned up and out on the road again. If anything goes wrong there's no way to get to the store to buy replacement parts which also tends to be a problem. In this case the hose from the tb to the metal line was fighting me to the point that the metal line was starting to move more than I wanted it to. If that line breaks I'm so screwed it's not even funny. I guess the marshmallow was more keen on my handywork than my own car is. Go figure.

The oil leak will get sorted out on my next free day which should be next week sometime. Until then I'll just keep topping it off and checking what I can when I get the chance. Life would be so much easier if I had a driveway to work in. Jacking up the passenger side is a bitch since the curb sits so high, and the drivers side almost got me run over twice so far.

Enough complaining from me for now. I have to head back out again. More updates tomorrow if anything gets done.

Update....

I replaced the vacuum line for the evap to tb. I should say I patched it since the original line is 2 different diameters for each end Suspect. Later I need to get in there again and replace the line from the solenoid to the canister since that's split open too. So far there's been no difference in idle quality or fuel mileage since I fixed the first line.

I also did the tb bypass which sucked since the hose was fused to the pipe on both ends. That was why I had trouble with it the other day when I tried. I ended up cutting it down the middle and then had to peal it off the pipe like it was an orange. I also replaced my leaky bleeder valve while I was there. Then I spent and hour trying to wash away all the coolant that spilled all over the street No. I ended up parking over the biggest puddle to try and keep animals and kids from getting into it affraid. I'm really hoping it rains soon so that the puddle will get further washed away. Figures as soon as I need rain the sun comes out Laughing

The oil leak is still there. I'll look into that on Saturday since that's my next free day.

PostSubject: Re: Major oil leak   Mon Nov 02, 2009 8:15 am

It took me all these months but I finally managed to find my oil leak.

Leak 1 (front of engine) Either the timing cover gasket or the front of the oil pan gasket is blown
Leak 2 (passenger side of engine) The sensor above the oil pan on the passenger side which I'm assuming is the knock sensor
Leak 3 (rear of engine) The intake manifold at the rear passenger side corner is leaking down the back of the engine

I now know where all my oil is going. Hopefully my next engine can control it's bladder cause this one is messy as hell. On a nice side note it doesn't leave much on the ground since the design of the car has enough nooks and crannies to catch most of it. Finding all my leaks made me think that I should probably add fire coverage to my insurance since everything is covered in oil and I still have electrical issues Laughing
