| I took the wagon out today and noticed the car pulls to the left quite a bit and I hear a clunking noise and I'm almost positive it's coming from the rear end. Vague... I know. Maybe finally time to R&R my rear end? | |

| "I hear a clunking noise" is hard to diagnose Can you be a little more descriptive? At speed / on throttle / off throttle....???? I doubt the rear has anything to do with pulling (unless you have a real flat tire) | |

That's what I thought. But i've had to do a pinion gear for a while and I thought it may have finally just given up

True! I've been debating just taking it off the road for the winter so I can do most of the things that need to be done. Pinion seal, cluster, etc. Plus it'll keep the salt and crap off.

| Elaborate..........come on.......use your words...... So acceleration When you step on it, it clunks once? or??? Throttle? anything over neutral is acceleration. anything under neutral is deacceleration so???? your trying to say what? it clunks once? or??? Turning? Both directions? One direction? From a stop? any speed? Have you put it in neutral to see if it does it then? Have you hit the brakes to see if it does it then Are the u-joints good? Have you jacked it up & checked axial play on each side? If I spend any more time with you, people are gonna start talking.... | |

| If it was a pinion gear you'd know it. I had one start to go, then it went. Truck didn't move. | |

I...ehhh....ummm...errr VROOM! - sdstick wrote:

Both directions? One direction? From a stop? any speed? The best description I can give you is I noticed it most while I was accelerating and turning left. It also clunked intermittently while moving straight @ 40mph. - sdstick wrote:

It does not. - sdstick wrote:

It does not - sdstick wrote:

No clue, honestly. - sdstick wrote:

Not yet. - sdstick wrote:

I think they're beginning to suspect.....

| If it clunks when you hit the gas, and also when downshifting it could quite possibly be the u joints. | |

But would that cause a pretty heavy pull to the left?

| Absolutely not. Is the clunk noise related to this pulling you speak of? | |

I would guess so. Both started today.

Steve, look at it this way, if it wasn't for the Cadet and his problems, you would have 3 posts, instead of 1900.

| Found the issue. One of my tires has a pretty big indentation, like a reverse bubble... | |

| I just had that same issue on my wagon, what size tire do you need? | |

225/75 preferably. Unless you have two of the same size so I can put both up front...

| *bump*
Still had the pulling issue after I swapped tires. Took it to get an alignment/ steering inspection. Turns out the idiots (read NOT ME) who put the brakes in before I bought the car sheared off the left bleeder valve AND pinched the hose to the frame so those need to be replaced. Also come to find I have a worn left inner tie rod and idler arm. So this weekend if we get some more nice weather we're going to crank all that out.

| Idler is super easy, 2 bolts. Do yourself a favor and soak the inner tie rod and adjusting sleeve with some pb blaster the day before.. Eyeball it close and get it aligned right after! Toe is a killer. Get the alignment printout of before and after, your pull could be cause by Caster. Typically, you should have half a degree less of caster to the left to compensate for road crown.. -Paul | |

Thanks for the heads up Paul. I have the FSM alignment specs. I'm going to bring those with me to the shop. Probably going to do the whole steering setup since I bought the parts about 2 months ago.

I align 'em straight up. I spend a lot of time in the left hand lane. Also soak the cross shaft bolts, if you're lucky they'll adjust the shims. Fishah posted some alignment specs recently.
