My latest foray into the dimension we will call idiotville.
I've been going right to town on the beast lately.New shocks.
Cleaned up the rusty floorpans,Installed bonney power seat rails
,installed center console with shifter,New pioneer head unit, new wiper arms,Yada yada yada.
So i decide it's time to change the rear end cover/fluids etc.
I had bought a cover off ebay a couple of years ago.Yes 2 years ago.I tend to procastinate.
So i buy the correct oil/posi additive and dig out the gasket i bought from Dal 3 years ago LOL.
Sand prime and paint the cover.
I'm about to go ahead and pull the old cover off and i decide to double check everything first.
THE GASKETS TOO BIG.
I'm thinking maybe it swelled sitting in storage too long.So i go to the parts store and compare it to a new gasket.
Gaskets fine it's the wrong COVER.I'm guessing it's a 7.5..
Now i have to either go to the dealer and buy one or i may go with a TA type we''l see how the cost breaks down.
Anyone got a camaro or whatever this thing fits that wants a nice looking cover for cheap.

While your at it Mark, take that useless gasket and throw it away as well. Head over to AutoZone and get the Fel-Pro replacement. It has holes the allow the swashing fluid to be redirected down the axle tubes to lubercate the axle bearings. To bad on the cover. It cleaned up nice. Just put it back on ebay and get your money back.

I don't get this Business with the gaskets .I've reread the writeups on issf
Like ten times this is the revised version of the gm gasket.
The only difference i've seen between it and the felpro is the felpro has holes and the gm has slots
i guess i'll be able to understand a little better once i get the pumpkin open
I figure worst case is i'll go pick up a felpro if i have to.
Picked up a new cover from the dealer wasn't too bad $35.
Time to start the whole priming /painting process all over again

Only $35, I think I paid $30 for a used cover.

Like you said, you'll see about the gasket once you have the cover off. I used an Xacto knife on the Felpro to widen the slot a bit.

I use a thin layer of RTV and a gasket. Makes removal very easy later on.

You do know that you could always just buy a Camaro. Smile

That is the way they have always been. And that cover, for whatever reason does not have the dimples to redirect the fluid. There should be two indentations that go into the fasket sealing area at the 9 Oclock, and 3 Oclock positions. At that point the holes in the FelPro gasket and indentations in the cover allow the fluid hitting the back of the cover to be forced outward to the axle tubes. The only other way for this to happen is while turning. Problem is while traveling on the highway for instance, if the fluid is not getting out to the axle bearings, they will fail prematurely.

My personal opinion is remove the stock cover, clean it and paint it. Return the one you bought and sell the other one. Use Bills idea of permatex, or Jims idea of Felpro and exacto knife with peramatex. I have been down this road so many times. My 94 ss with just 37k on it lost the rearend and had to be replaced. After I got the car back, I pulled the cover and replaed the gasket with a felpro one. Never had another problem with it.

PostSubject: Rearend gasket researched   Still living in Idiotville EmptySun Apr 05, 2009 8:10 pm

Ok so i spent some time saturday at my friend Larry Cotes house.
He's in the process of putting a new rearend in larry jrs car.
He had one rearend that was bad and Jason D. took it apart to show us how it's done.
Pretty interesting stuff.but there's really nothing hi tech about it.
I took some pictures of the housing and cover .
It's a lot easier to explain the set up this way.

Having said all that i will probably return the first cover to the dealer and
go with the stock cover as i now have one that's in decent shape.
And as a side note that freshly sandblasted and painted rearend housing
is now sitting on my patio.awaitng a complete rebuild. cheers
