Forum question for the boss mod

What exactly needs to be changed to add new emoticons? Is it a programming thing on the sites code or can outside emoticons be used if they're inputted in a specific way? I only ask because it seems that a few people mentioned not having the emoticons that they need for a particular reply and it got me curious.

I asked that myself a while back. Turns out google and other search sites send out a program that goes through all the pages of a website and catalogs what's there. That way those pages will show up when you do a search on google.
