Take the number of cars Bill might have bought and sold/registered in NH in his lifetime, then multiply the total dollar amount by 6.25% (mass tax rate)and that would equal one hell of a chunk of change I bet. I shutter to think what I have spent.

| Yeah, but we pay the "tax" when we register them. Registration fees are high to compensate for the lack of sales tax. _________________ Bill "The Verb" Crovo - Resident Car Slut & Unicorn Hunter A Toasted Marshmallow, A Long German, A Lame Suburban and expensive dreams... True, but according to my many friends north of the border, while it still sucks on newer vehicles, it's almost non-existent when you're dealing with cars like 15 years old or more... When I registered the DGGM SS, they charged me over 500 dollars to put it on the road...and on top of that, I will have to pay like 45 dollars in excise tax each year...which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, I paid tax on the car when I bought it. That's the same as re-trying someone for a crime they've been found not guilty of! lol This is the reason I'll never own a newer car in this state. Even if I could afford it...it still pisses me off. I'm sure that money goes to roads and bridges as well, yeah... It's okay, I'm sure I'll be eyeballing houses in NH someday... | |

| Yeah, it's not as bad as you guys, but it's more than it used to be. 3 or 4 years ago, it cost me 40 bucks a year to register each B body. They changed the way the registration values were restructured a few years ago and now it's $160 a year! And they've only gotten older.... | The thing that pisses me off about the RMV is how they charge sales tax. It's not based on purchase price, its based on NADA book. So when I bought the caprice, I paid $1200. They valued it at $2700 and I was taxed accordingly. I've always felt thats total bullshit. Tax me what I paid for the car. It'd be like if I bought something at Wally World for $10 and they charged me the tax for $30. My brother just got hosed too. Bought his Scoobie for 4k. Booked out at $6,800. $490 to get it on the road. | |

| In RI we pay sales tax when we register. But, we can write $50 on the bill of sale lol. They started doing the excise tax based on car value but it's not a lot... registration is 1 year ($60) and then after the one year it's good for two once renewed ($60 for renew). | |

Now I know why you still roll with RI plates I just want to point out, that if Crovo did this in MA he would have to get a dealer license...

I've registered two cars (that weren't tax exempt) since RI started charging "sales tax based on NADA value" and both times I was taxed on the bill of sale .

| MA will also charge you sales tax on a mint 95 Impala SS if you try to register a banged up and clapped out base-model 95 Caprice that just ekes by on its inspection. S'ridiculous! | |
