Help with weight loss Empty
PostSubject: Help with weight loss   Help with weight loss EmptyTue Jan 26, 2010 5:03 pm

I want to pull 400-500 lbs out of the Impala when it gets rebuilt, yet keep it safe.
Some of the things I have been thinking of would be to use the manual seat tracks in the caprice instead of the power ones, remove all sound deadning material under carpet, and door panels, engine compartment. Remove all air bag, and abs equipment.
I know this does not add up to 400 lbs, so what else can I do to take the weight out?

If this was going to be a race car, I would know what to do.

Just looking for ideas I can use.

Define "safe"? Are you still going to drive it a lot? Like, lose the a/c, p/s?

I spent a lot of time getting my T down to 3,200 lbs, and I could probably pull another 100 lbs out it pretty easy but the cost is'nt justified.

Safe, meaning nothing like removing the intrusion beams in the doors, removing stuff, or drilling holes in areas that protect passengers in accidents.

I can live without abs, or air bags.

A/C is already deleted, and as heavy as these cars are already, I want to keep p/s.

windshield washer tank and pump(doesnt weigh much empty but holds about a gallon of liquid)
spare tire and jack

then you can change small things out depending what you have.
lighted compass rearview- plain rear view
stock radio-aftermarket
electric antenna-mast
etc,etc

remove owners manual and anything else not necessary from the glove box.

i know most of this stuff doesnt way much by itself, but put together in a pile
and it starts to add up.
if i think of anything else ill post it up.

Critical systems is an open area of discussion. If the car still works then the system wasn't that critical Wink

Ok, here goes. Lots of stuff above already covered.
1- Tubular front control arms (not sure how much but they are lighter on a G-car)
2- Alum. aftermaket (same size) calipers
3- Alum driveshaft (if you don't have one already)
4- 15" superlight wheels, Welds, Convo-pro's
5- mini starter
6- Alum cyl. heads
7- Alum bumper reinforcements (i don't think you are losing safety if you build them right, Monte Carlos had em factory)
8- Remove front sway bar (yes i drive two of my cars on the street like this)

Can I ask why? If you remove a couple hundred pounds, will it really be worth the 2 tenths at the track that you won't feel on the street? I, for one, would rather have the creature comforts. Smile

Yeah, I heard the same stuff on the Buick board. Everyone swore there was no way I was going to run 11's with a stock turbo/longblock, let alone spraying alky on pump gas with crappy drag radials. Guess what, where there's a will there's a way.
I think a cheap turbo on a LT1 would haul a**. I'm going to have to make some turbo-headers.
