| Not sure what the boxy a/c setup looks like but I have a complete serpentine belt set up from a 91-93 car with ac compressor, alternator, water pump and all the pulleys and brackets if you wanted to swap over to a single belt. | |

| Better question, is it the R4 style pump or the older one? I'm guessing it's the older A6 style since I think those are out of production? | |

| Thanks Indy, but this is for a 83 2 door boxy with 51k original miles. He wants to be original. I'll see if I can post up a picture of the compressor. | |

| Gotcha. Wasn't someone on here parting out like three 77-79 caprices with air? | |

| It is likely the R4 compressor that was used all the way to the '93 cars. I think the very early box bodies had the A6, with the R4 mixed in around 1980 or so? I don't know what model numbers/changes in application came into play over the years though.
Glen, the R4 is that typical AC compressor that came on most 1980s GM cars that is short and stubby, the A6 is a longer skinnier one, about a foot long from the front to the back.

| You are likely right thats it's the R4 pancake compressor, my 83 Malibu had an R4, mounted on the drivers side.
In this case, if the owner wants to keep the car original, I would try to find a reputable local rebuilder to rebuild the compressor that is on the car. Only way you are going to keep the "original" look and matching serial numbers.

| I have a yard fresh R4 in my garage I'm never gonna use. I found out the hard way that some cars had larger pulleys than B-bodies. I'll check it and see what numbers it has on it, came off a 91 (I think) Fleetwood. | |

| Actually, I should have the original compressor off my 83 Malibu, worked when I removed it a few years ago and stored inside. I'm going to serpentine and buying new stuff for that car, sooooooo...... make me an offer. I'll dig it up tonight. | |

Thanks Glen I couldn't tell you if it works. I know the compressor engaged and didn't make noise. The AC did work, I pulled the car apart 3 years ago and put the compressor in the basement. Car had 99k miles. Make me an offer on it, not sure what this is worth.
