PostSubject: rear drum parts   Wed Feb 22, 2012 5:53 pm

so today i went to do my rear shoes adjusters and inner guts put the car on stands got the wheels off and went to take my drums off first one was a pain but no biggie the second one came off with no effort(uh oh) once putting the drum down i realized that the whole inside of it was empty except for the wheel cyl and a hose clamp going around it with 2 bolts in it.
i was a little shocked i never noticed but it never braked like 1/4 the brakes were gone. i figured i bought all the hardware kits (ie springs new park brake adjuster ect.....) no big deal well everything i need the kits dont have. i need the little studs that come out of the wheel cyl, the piece that keeps the 2 shoes separated at he top,and the piece that the 2 springs go over and hold the very tops of the shoes in place. ive tried looking the peices up but every where only has the kits i already have......would my best bet to be just go to the junk yard and rip apart a drum set up? the fact that the kid who owned this before me works at jiffy lube scares the shit outta me i wouldnt have even done that on a back yard beater

That is strange. Which lube place did he work at??? Just so I know not to go there lol. I would see exactly what you need via shop manual/diagram. try to hunt down part numbers. Or Im sure there is a member here that has a drum setup they dont need anymore. Theres a yard in Norton we can hit up to maybe salvage som parts from a RMW they have there.

They sell all those parts over the counter.
Have them look up brake components.

alright i need 2 wheel cylinder "links" studs that push out on pads from wheel cyl
a park brake strut
and shoe guide plate ?
NEVER ever go to the jiffy lube in Cumberland,ri because this is just silly that someone who works on cars would do such a horrible hack job.
i cant find any parts numbers or lists on anything other thain disk shit anyone know of a place to look?

Oh my god man, that is idiotic. Someone, I forget who, just went through this with a vehicle, same thing, pulled the drum, nothing inside, I think the line was crimped off or something crazy like that. 3 wheel braking! I forget who was telling me, but you're not alone either way.

My new 95 was/is the same way.
Cheapskate prior owner didnt want to spring for the fix.
Do the cables work on your car?
Cuz if they dont doesnt matter whats under the rotor.

haha yea when i looked closer i noticed the brake line was flattened like someone put a c-clamp over then whole thing and tightened down. the worst part is i never noticed till now makes me wonder what else im going to find down the road.

im most likely going to have to replace the pass side e-brake cable since it was just in the rotor doing its own thing for who knows how long the knub on the end is gone but ive seen my old boss trim down some stretched cables and re-crimp the ends on so if i can do that i will just need it to work once for my sticker Very Happy unless anyone knows a guy who knows a place......haha cant wait to put her back on the road and scrap my shitty crown vic

I'm guilty lol... I took everything out of the rear brakes on my first caprice because I was a broke high school kid and I couldn't listen to the noise anymore.

Wow, I thought the clunking painted over rear brakes on my Lesabre was half-ass, but that takes the cake!

I know someone that clamped rubber hose over a rotted brake line to get the car to a repair shop, surprisingly it got the car there!
