| I went to move the impala today, and something broke in the ass end, so I can't move it at all.
I pulled the other rearend out of the barn, drained the oil, my good pair of carhards are now ruined with gear oil on right leg. Went to pull the pin bolt, spun the head to a nice round finish. Tried the chisel trick, broke the head off the bolt. Took my cut off wheel, cut the housing, broke 2 discs, 1 grinder. Got the bolt out, pin was stuck, used brass punch and 5 pound mallet, bent punch. Pulled the axles, got air gun to pull bearing caps, no air. WTF, you think I'd have called it a night. Pulled caps, got diff out, carrier bearing looked like it had sand in it. Couldnt get pinion gear out, flipped The rear over, pounded out pinion gear with hammer, slide out of hand, into oil drain pan, soaked other pant leg with oil. Set housing on floor.
Round 2! Grabbed 91 9c1 rearend with new auburn posi unit, 3:08 gears, pulled cover, wouldn't even spin. (this was rebuilt by previous owner, 0 miles) it was bound up. Teeth marks across new auburn posi unit (guessing his adjustments were WAY off) Got diff out, pinion gear is jambed tight, flipped, hammer, caught it this time. Set diff on bench, rearend falls off lift arms, hits me in the back of the leg. Rearend parts anyone?

| Just another notch in the goodbye impala book, I think I'm going to pull all the Hotchkis and the good stuff and sell it as is. It's time. (again) | |

| Sorry to hear of your troubles. These cars have a track record of not only wearing your check book thin, but patience as well. i hope you get it all figured out and it works out in the end. | |

| Mikey has some 3.42 gears for sale if I remember correctly. Could be a start. If you get out of the B-body game, stick around so we can see pics of the truck you're restoring | |

| So where the hell are you in the process? I see you have gears. So the impala housing from the barn no good (beaten to death by a BFH & cut up in Freddy Krueger style?while wearing oil stained carhards) You get 2 good axles & a posi thats been to the beach. Are you afraid to use that posi? just a douche & go? or no? So you go after the 9C1 rear. What were you looking to get from that? Are those parts reusable?? You still have the non-cooperative rear under your impala right? So if you pull that & put away the BFH & cut off wheel, you can make 1 out of 3? I tried to pay attention... By the way....hope today is better... ... | |

DUH Apparently I forgot who I was talking to. I'm surprised you don't have a fully assembled rear for it already...or two...or a shed full I hope it works out for ya, even if you do sell it.

Here is the breakdown for the slow people (steve ) The rearend in the barn/shed was in the Purpala Mike has now, i took the rearend out of my DGGM car to put in the purple one because it was whining like a bitch, and i wouldn't sell a POS to anyone, so it was easier to swap out a good known rear end into the purple car, and mike has been smilling ever since. I put the whining rearend in the barn last summer after my mechanic didn't have the ambition to rebuild it for me (it was there for more than 2 months) so i wanted to pull it out and see if i could just replace the bearings, and put it back in with the 3:08s. thats y i pulled it apart. (im pretty good and changing bearings) well the pin head rounded, now the rest is in the above story. The 91 9C1 rearend was rebult by the guy i bought all my Hotchkis stuff from, he gave it to me, it has a brand new Auburn posi unit in it, with brand new 3:08 gears. I pulled it apart to get the new auburn unit out so i can get it installed into the SS rearend that is now bare, it was just a nightmare from the get go. The rear in there now has a broken pinion bearning i would guess, its locked up, can't move the car. And i'm going to cut the one in the car up alright, into about 20 pieces.

| OK, I thought you cut up the Barn Impala housing. Got it now Freddy Sand blast the leftover impala housing for me & I'll buy it naked Just leave in the backing plates & cover. That is....assuming the casting is in reusable condition. | |
