I was curious if there's any benefit to getting a tune on a stock engine?
I've always tuned my stock engines to at least get some advance in the spark to get some more efficiency and throttle response.

Change VIN

=Disable VATS

=Change RPM or speed limiters

=Speedometer recalibration for axle ratio or tire changes

=POWER TUNE = spark timing and fuel remapped for more hp/torque

=ECONOMY TUNE = improved mpg

=High or low octane programming

=Lower fan turn-on temp settings

=Remap shift patterns for performance or towing

=Remap shift pressures for firmer shifts

=Modify TCC lockup speeds for performance or towing

Compensate for high stall TC

Switch automatic to manual transmission or vice versa

Compensate for displacement changes

Adjust for different fuel injectors

Adjust for larger throttle body

Compensate for cam changes for driveability and power

=Delete emission functions and codes (EGR, AIR pump, EVAP, O2s, etc.)

=Program for MAFless operation = speed density mode

=Delete various nuisances (SKIP SHIFT, traction control ,etc.)

Remove or add torque management

Delete other miscellaneous functions and trouble codes (A/C, oil level, etc.)

Nitrous, forced induction and more...


Things marked = at the begining, are ones that you can do to a stock motor without any real mods.


Or there are some on here that can tune as well.

Do they have selectable tunes or is it one or the other?

MAFless? what other changes do you need to make? is there an existing MAP sensor that's got a high enough resolution to handle it or do you need an aftermarket sensor?

I have OBD1... so no big deal.
I was wondering about those 'DIY' tuning kits. I think I saw something called TunerCAT or something?

I bought the cable and used tunerCAT before, not too hard to use. I did only change fan temps and adjust my speedo though. Looks like you can do some fun stuff in there.

Is TunerCat locked to your ECU when you use it or if someone I know has TunerCAT and the cable, can they tune my car?
