| So the time comes to line in up. I was referred to the guy around the corner. I set up the appointment 2 weeks ago, waiting patiently for this day. I show him the new Cap/ SS specs. and he says no problem. "I'll call ya when It's done" he says. 45 Min. later he calls the house and tells Joy "the Alignment machine is broke and I don't know when It's going to be fixed". WTF! OK , So I go down and talk to him and he tells me he's getting out of the alignment business, sounds fishy to me! He at least recomended a guy down the Street. This guy (John) down the street I've known since I was a teen , I show John the specs and he says no problem. Just by coincidnce the Alignment Rep was standing there when I told John about the "Broken Alignment machine" the Rep says, It's not broke. I say, that's what he told me. The Rep says, If it was broke he would have called me! What a bunch of Bullshit! I hate it when People waste my time like that! I've got an appointment with John next Monday so we'll see how it goes. | |

Look at it this way, at least he didn't call you and tell you it was all done, when he didn't touch it.

Tom C. True that. He probably got scared of the steering setup in these cars. I found small shops are the only ones that can do these cars correctly. Places that use that computer alignment BS usually make it worse than it was.

Tom C. I counted the shims when I installed them. He would have heard it from me once I found out.

| I hear ya. Back in '09, I took my car to a, well...at the time, reputable place for an alignment. My upper control arm came loose somehow, and the shims were gone. After 45 min. And a road test the guy says its all set. I drive away and let go of the wheel, and its worse, way worse than before. I looked and found no shims at all. They just tightened the bolts. Got my money back and did it at school with a hunter machine. The guy even told me its as close to factory specs as possible. I say that's pretty impossible given the age of the car and its front end component wear. So, that's my rant. Do you have a place you can suggest? | |

| I've found the GOOD guys (that do it right) require appointments. Usually because word gets around theyre busy. I have a shop that charges like $50 for an alignment & then adds for shims. | |

| The last one I got was at Duff Spring in Medford, it wasn't bad at all but it was higher priced, like 80 bucks or something. They set it up with those custom Impala SS specs however. I would be interested in finding another place though because it was expensive, and they aren't open on the weekend...

That's a bullshit statement, I'm a Frakiin awesome outboard mechanic and I don't do appointments. My alignment guy is busy 6 days a week, he is wicked efficient and likes keeping the local car guys going. We keep him rolling in the $.

"I've found" qualifys the statement. It's great when a customer can walk in & get taken care of immediately. BUTI'd be pissed if I walked back in to get car/outboard & found out it didnt get touched cuz of walk-ins. Around here, we make those guys move North... hence....Toms problem...

| You need to make these long range appointments to get alignments? I usually just drive in with specs in hand and tell them to align that sucka. |

| Al probably won't align lowered cars.
Take a close look at the SmartCamber tool.
Then take at look at the SmartTool level. There are more digital levels out now.

I have not used a shop for alignment since the late seventies, Dang, has it really been that long? I use fishing line, a plumb bob, a measuring tape and this "smart level". Sometimes I use white masking tape on the tire's perimeter and then trace a "true center path" line with a sharpie marker for even better accuracy. Here it is setting up my 9" housing on the Bridgeport just prior to sweep indicating the last .001" accuracy. It works on any off angle, and can be "zeroed" at that desired inclination. Also, it converts to percentage reading, degrees (+) or (-). Indeed, smart! .
