Advice on Vortec Intake Gaskets Empty
PostSubject: Advice on Vortec Intake Gaskets   Advice on Vortec Intake Gaskets EmptyFri Dec 18, 2015 9:30 am

So my 96 K1500 with a 5.0 has been throwing a P0308 on cold mornings since last winter. Granted all spring, summer and until about 3 weeks ago, it was fine. Only on mornings below freezing would it throw a cylinder 8 misfire. Anyway, I'm an idiot and thought it was the EGR valve (which was sticking). I replaced that a week ago and still misfiring. I then checked the oil and it looks a little milky so I am now thinking its an intake gasket.

The issue is I have had the truck over a year and the problem is getting worse. My fear is that the coolant has damaged the engine because I ran it for so long. I know I need to pull the oil pan and look at the bearings for scoring, but I am not confident on what to look for. I will Google it for help, but would it be best to have a mechanic check it out? I only drive it about 5-10 miles a day and occasional weekends. I'd love to just throw some Felpro gaskets on it and call it a day.

I feel like an idiot for not checking the oil earlier, especially when I changed it back in September (though it seemed fine).

Well you could always change the gaskets and if the engine goes south, you are only out $20 in gaskets.

Yeah I think I am just going to do it. I figure it will take me a day to do it. Engine isn't knocking when warmed up. Just the first 10-15 minutes on a cold morning will it have a misfire cylinder 8.

I think I will spring for the Felpro gaskets. They are $50 but they supposedly last longer than the plastic and rubber OEM ones. I was just reading that some folks will replace the gaskets only to have them fail a year later. That could be improper torque though.

I'd do them. My Astro lost the defective gm gaskets ages ago. I remember the guy I got it from running it and the van starting to misfire as well as have a sticking lifter. I don't know if that was related. He had the gaskets done and the same engine now has 270k. There is a coolant leak again...so I suspect the shop didn't use the updated gaskets. However it's very slow and seems to be external...can't find it and it's been running fine for the last 50k like that.
