| Yesterday I get a call from my brother saying as he drove along he smelled smoke and saw some coming out behind his car, yet the engine seemed to be running fine, except the AC comp. was making a loud chattering noise. I'm guessing it was burning the belt.
The noise is pretty bad so I'm thinking it's gotta be replaced, I haven't looked at it yet but he doesn't want to drive the car, I'm not sure if the serp belt is still being burned up. Is there a way to put a smaller belt on there to delete the AC easily for the time being? Anyone got a good compressor?

| Hi Matt
You can get an AC delete pulley that is pretty inexpensive. It takes place of the compressor. Bill M. has done this. He will probably chime in.

| Thanks Tom, I'll tell him that's an option.
I looked at this closer, there is a metal piece right on the front of the pulley but behind another front/outermost part on the pulley that is completely detached and loose in there, when the car is running it clangs all over the place making the noise.

| Would that be the a/c clutch that exploded in there? | |

| I have had that happen before. Stop driving it until it is fixed. The delete pully is the cheap way out.
AND BUY A NEW BELT! |

| The Air Conditioning Compressor Clutch is definitely BLOWN!!! new compressors arent cheap but to me it would be worth it....my a/c compressor clutch is on its way out too i think it is also noisy but im not touching it because my a/c still blows ICE COLD!!!! | |

| I think you can just replace the clutch? | |

| replacing just the clutch is a pain in the you know what, u need specialized tools. if your compressor has 100,000 miles on it you might as well replace it neways | |

| I think thats the clutch based on the Mazda Rotary design Hey we all thought that design would fail early remember? | Checked with a few junkyards, found a compressor from a 95 SS for 70 bucks, another from another SS for 40 (maybe some SS's got clunkered ). If those turn out to be crap or have no warranty whatsoever, a delete pulley will prob. go on... | |

| I got the one from the 95 SS for my brother today- dirty but not bad for the price, 30 day warranty on it. I asked if the rest of the car was still there, the guy said it hadn't been there long but the grille and the whole decklid are gone. It's a closed yard (FAIL) so I couldn't go in to look at the car | |

| Well this isn't good- it seems the one the junkyard sold me is a crap compressor...I don't know what's wrong with it but I just got a call saying something was seized, seemed to move when I picked it up.
Anyway, now they're going to just try to do the clutch and bearing replacement on the pump that's in the car already, some place in Medford sells the kits I think.
