I remember a few years ago reading a neat trick to get the inside looking like new. Was it Simple Green? I don't remember. Anyone have a good way?

I poured about a half gallon of purple power into one. Let it sit a little, then stuck the hose in it and sprayed it in all the different holes until the water was clean. Lots of nasty crap came out of it. On another note, you can get a brand new one from GM for about $100 with the level sensor and cap included.

One trick that works on containers sometimes is to fill it with hot water and detergent and sharp/jagged aggregate like gravel, traprock, whatever. Then you agitate the heck out of it, rinse, repeat as necessary. This is how a lot of guys clean out old jerry cans before putting them back into service.

That's good idea too!

Thanks for sharing that Dave.

Call me crazy, but I swear I heard that someone did the above method like with gravel, but used broken ice cubes so they'd melt afterward?

Glad I had something to contribute for once.

It's hard to imagine that ice cubes are sharp enough or will last long enough to get the job done. Rocks/gravel aren't going to hurt anything and are aggressive enough without posing any threat to the plastic. But if people here have used the ice method, then so be it!

Rocks can get stuck in there. You're trying to get shit out not add any. There are many chambers in the tank that trap sediments that chuck up in there.

I've had it soaking in Purple Power/water mix all day. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Well then, I guess I'll keep the rocks for the old gas cans and other single-chamber vessels that need cleaning.

Use your hose sprayer jammed in the holes. Wherever you spray it, spray up so the open holes are at the top and the crap floats out. Keep changing holes to get all the chambers.
