PostSubject: Wireless network help   Sat Sep 22, 2012 2:59 pm

So I have a Sony vaio laptop with wireless lan, and a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I have had everything working about a year and a half ago. The router was new then. I had major issues and needed tech at the time. That was a nightmare talking to support in India. Finally I got everything going. A month ago I reinstalled windows vista into my desk top, and never gave it two thoughts. But a couple days ago, I decided it would good to start using it again. But I could not access the network. Mostly because the network was not there anymore. So I started from scratch, and finally got everything back up and running on the hardware side, and software side at the desk top. Problem is I can not get the lap top to fully connect. It says it is connected but limited, with a little yellow triangle over the network connection icon at the bottom. I put in the correct pass phrase, and it accepted it, but I still can't access the interwebs with the vaio. Does anyone know how to make it work? I would have pulled my hair out, but........ Rolling Eyes

Do you have any firewalls or passwords in your laptop or in the router?

Usually you can log into the router and change the settings in there by going to the IP address. Like 192.168.1.1 or something. Username is usally admin and password is usually password...

No. The firewalls on both computers are set to allow wireless, and router usage in the exceptions tab.
This is what I am seeing on the lap top end.

Do you have the option to have no security on the router? Just have it as an open network? If so, set it up that way and see if your lappy will surf. If it does, leave it open. Who cares if someone else can surf on your network occaisonally? Shouldn't slow you down... Wink

Bill,
I think if you hit "START" then right click on "My Computer" then "properties"
You'll find out what version of software your running
Have you run Windows Update?
If not start with that, alot of the fixes for these types of problems have been addressed.
I do run Vista on one of my PC's @ work & it can be a little un cooperative sometimes.
Sorry...not specifics for the network here...

I guess I got beat on this one. My phone connects fine, but the laptop will not. I have tried every thing I could find on the interwebs from Jim's to Steve's suggestions. All the suggested fixes have been tried. Surprised

And it won't connect without security enabled?

Bummer. If you can connect with the phone, it's gotta be some setting in the laptop. Sorry I can't help... Sad

Is there an indicator on the laptop for the wireless? Is it disabled in the BIOS?

I'll see if I can come up with any tips when I get to my Vista PC at work.
I dont run a wireless connection but maybe if I see the options I can give you some options. Going back to read your original post.

I had connected the laptop to the modem to upload all windows updates yesterday. I am going to try it again.

Bill,
So the desktop is working fine right?
Your desktop is hardwired or wireless to the router?
There are a few different options
On your desktop
Click START then NETWORK
What do you see?
At the top of the screen there is NETWORK and SHARING CENTER (Click that)
What do you see?
Depending on where you are here....the next step will vary
Do you have Network Discovery ON?, how about File Sharing?

Now do the same thing with the laptop & let me know what's what
Is the laptop running Vista too?
Is the wireless card factory installed or did you add it?

Sorry to here your troubles Bill,
start trouble shooting like it was a car....
laptop has an RJ45 connector on the back or side right....so plug that into the cable modem directly, OR your wireless router
assuming it has ports as well (i'll google image your router later).

assuming you have a CAT5/CAT6 cable once laptop connected to home netowork, test that it functions.
you got the desktop working so i know you can get the laptop working this way.
once it works we rule out any defective Hardware or software.

get back to us with results of laptop on WIRED network and then we tackle wireless setup.

This might be a stupid suggestion, but have you tried restarting the router, modem, and laptop? I've had this error before, and sometimes that is all it takes.

Both great ideas, but I have tried them all. I plugged the ethernet cable into the laptop to download any missing windows updates. To do this I had to reboot the modem, and after the updates, I rebooted the lap top.

Connected without issue. Surfed the web, and downloaded updates.
