| Why am I not surprised to find this today. No wonder why my low coolant light was on when I drove it last week. Its probably a good thing I've only taken it out twice in the last 3 weeks. Its a good thing that all the tax money is gone, and now I cant pay for parts right now. A real er. Gotta pull some over time for this one. I stuffed a rag under it so it doesnt cause any(more) damage for now. Any suggestions on where and what brand parts to get will be helpful. | |

-ALF out.... Thanks! I may just do that this week. Do they need a core? I havnt had the, um...fortune, of having to replace one yet. Did you swap housings just for the fact that the Cardone one doesn't come with one? Also, was your T stat bad, or did something cause it after the pump swap?

| yes it's cheap cuz has no housing but you can buy one with for more money
yes i had a core to give them ... sure you can get a core at junk yard ???
when i did it the old stat had TINY drip in new WP so i got a 160 degree stat thru that in and leak/drip stopped.

| Don't forget teflon tape or past for the 6 w/p bolts, as they bolt into water jackets. I usually run them in bare, to keep the gasket set in the correct location, then pull them out one at a time and put the tape on, then torque down. | |

| torque smork.. it ain't a cylinder head, it's a friggin pump. i did it in my driveway with hand tools. crank it snug to what you think is tight that it won't loosen from vibrations....after job is done you run the car in drive way and check for leaks...if none take it for a 10 mile drive and come home and check for leaks again.... I was poping the hood every day for a week, now i can't remember the last time i looked under there... if you need to be spoon fed here is my saga, pics and all..... http://www.impalassforum.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=243202&highlight=water+pump -ALF out.. | |

| I second the reman pump unless you can afford a new delco. I have used the new aftermarket ones and some just are not machined right. Most have the holes for the guide pins drilled too small, one had the pocket the t-stat sits in cut too deep so it always leaked around the water outlet. Had to get the pump replaced. At least with a reman there's a good chance it started out as a delco pump at some point. | |

| Or instead of getting the cheap valucraft, buy the Duralast for a few bucks more and get a lifetime warranty. You are a keeper of cars, so this may be a better choice for you. | |

| I decided to go with the Duralast as Bill recommended. I was contemplating buying an electric one. Definitely too much money for a car that doesnt get driven often. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Duralast-New-Water-Pump/1996-Chevrolet-Caprice/_/N-j4v2pZ8ii0v?itemIdentifier=197245_176755_10947_ Whats a good silicone to use? I used the gray Chrysler RTV on my diff cover with no problems. Sound about right? Does anyone have any online discount codes for this? Thanks! | |

| I don't use any silicone on the pump, just a little indian head shellac. On a similar note I noticed my RMW's belt is squealing and found that the reman I installed started leaking from where the upper heater pipe fits into the pump. Guess its going back to advance | |

I will be using it to my advantage this week. Thanks for posting the link.
