Ask Al how much room there is in the bay of my LS swap, I bet I can fit a 6BT without too much trouble and get away from most of the vibration issues the 4BT has.

I will need a free (or damn near) car to try it on. Pretty sure I know where I can get at least a "core" 6BT for next to nothing to do test fits with, and I have a buddy who is a very high end welder. So as long as I have a car I don't mind hacking up (I have put word in with the junkyard up the road to call me if one comes in), I have some plans for a spring project...

That'd be a pretty kickass project! (It'd HAVE to be a wagon, though!)

A guy on Longroof did a Durmax swap into a couple wagons. From what i've read on his conversions, its not easy, the engine doesnt clear as it it sits above the hood line and there are some other issues to contend with. Still a pretty cool swap thou.

I think Bill had used the old 6.2's and 6.5's, not the Duramax engines...

Hmm, maybe you're right, I could be mixing it up. Swore it was a Duramax. Either way, I do recall the battles he had to get them in there.

It should be noted that I would not even bother trying this if I was not totally addicted to the smell of burning diesel and the rediculous TQ that they produce.

No doubt this would be a lot of work, which is why I want to get a near free car (preferably without motor already) and use a "core" motor to try it out. That way I am out next to nothing if it doesn't work.

Justin - Hood clearance is the LAST thing I am going to worry about on this swap. If I can get it to "fit" I will figure that out then. Seeing it done on that CV makes me think it could easily be done on a Caprice.


I know guys with BUILT 6BT motors getting 20+ MPG on lifted Dodge trucks that weight a ton more than our cars... just imagine the possibilities! A 4BT would get 30+ mpg I'm sure, but they rattle like the dickens, so not worth the trouble, plus, they are harder to find, and why have 4 if you can have 6!

Oh I get that. Its like your LS build, the alernator clearing was the least of the issues compared to just getting the motor in and working. Plus now that its been done before there is at least a good base to get going thus you wont spend a ton of time on something if you get hung up somewhere. Plus like I said, a diesel caprice would be totally BA.

Then again, I've never built a car so I can only speculate... ok fine, talk out of my ass.

Finally! A subject I can sink my teeth in to. I would love to get my hands on a 91-93 wagon for a 6.5 or duramax conversion.

I'm probably one of the biggest novices here and I've been thinking for a few years how awesome something like this would be. Just like what's commented in that vid of the 4bt in the Vic by the owner the car gets 40 MPG, tows whatever he wants, and has a ton of room. How awesome is that?

Side note, if the intake gaskets ever go on my Caprice, the 305 is coming out for something else rather than being repaired, methinks. Hmmm...

I'd Like to find an old diesel caprice box wagon and drop in an older 6.2/6.5 or a cummins. I like the idea of a Cummins though!

i know a guy out here whos basically a bag of dust (if he isnt dead already) he has a whole yard full of caprices, i bought a 87 brougham LS off him and go by there every couple months to see the stuff. he has 2 more 4 door boxes, i think a regular wagon with a 307 and a light blue diesel one for sale... each one hes asking like $300-$500 There was also a midnight blue 1991 with dark leather interior and 73k miles for sale. like i said he couldve died by now didnt look so hot last time i saw him, but the guys yard is full of caprice, crown vic and all kinds of stuff. if anyone is interested i can PM info, i'd even be willing to go for a drive up there with them.

So how much is that 91? If its an LTZ, id pretty much die.

My vote is for the Navistar DT466E, strong & plentiful, and will keep me out of Caterpillar's price constraints, or should I say "cost insanity".

But HEY, I AM a sick puppy, because I freely admit to actually measuring in earnest, the Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines that I work on at my job, for possible fitment to my 1990 GMC V3500!

For a better fit, the Detroit Series 50 chunk is a lot shorter, minus 2 cylinders, but has WAY too much pulse vibration (4 stroke & 4 cylinders).

Does anybody have an old rebuildable Detroit Diesel 12 V71 two stroke just laying around? THAT is worth doing just for how it would SOUND!, , , , YIKES!

I don't like the Izuzu-DuraMax (Japanese) engines, because after having had to rebuild them, I find that they are not built "rebuildable" like Cat, DD, Cummins, Mack etc.

Those series 60 N3's are something else when it comes to tuning the valves and injectors. I love the sound of the jakes tho. Imagine stuffing an ism/x in something like a caprice. It's impossible but...

D.D. Series 50 is an I-4 @ 572 C.I.D. Basically 2/3rds of the Series 60.

Cummins QST30 1200 HP & 3700 Lbs/Ft Tq HD construction specifications
I never worked on the Cummins engines. Only Mack, D/D, Cat, Mercedes & International. (oh, & Isuzu-DuraMax)
