| Since I'm still a luddite and (stupidly) refuse to hop on the LS bandwagon , I'm going to stick with building up my LO5 a bit longer. I've been toying with a few head options 1st, just a valve job on the stockers, probably not a lot of gain for $400-500. Next, friend of mine on the wagon board has a set of freshly refurb Vortecs that were never installed. He's asking $400, but then I have to either get a carb intake+adapter plate (~$300) or the $400 GMPP TBI intake. Either way, new intake and about $700-800 all in. Finally, Summit has their brand ALUMINUM heads, 87-95 SBC, $900. All of these combos I would also add Scorpion 1.5 narrow body full roller rockers. What would you guys do? | |

- LT1!
If I were to go thru all the work of an LT1 swap, why not just go LS?

| Because lt1 would be a bolt in thing. Motor mounts are the same, exhaust is the same, transmission bell housing bolt pattern is the same.
All you would have to do is connect less than 10 wires in you car for an increase of at least 100hp. If you tuned the PCM and added better heads and whatever you'd be over 300 hp easy.
I have lt1 radiators, fans, accessories, and coolant buckets here. You could probably even get your a/c to work with a custom accessory drive.

I can just as easily do heads and not have to pull a motor and transmission, futz with a new belt drive, get a tune, change my fuel pump, wrap the A/C line from the headers.... So, back to topic. HEAD options for an SBC.

| I agree lt1 is NOT the answer. Just stating that it's a quicker upgrade than an ls1 headache.
You first need the right cam to allow better air flow. Once you have the right cam go with the vortec heads and adapter. Probably run a 1094 fel pro head gasket.
Once you start getting into bigger HP components your gonna come to a point where dumping the TBI is gonna have to happen. (Won't push enough fuel/ air) Your limited by a small 2 bbl intake after a certain point. Either go back in time to a carb or upgrade to a TPI setup. Which is where the lt1/ls1 come into play.
No doubt big power CAN come from a tbi, it's just going to cost you a small fortune. Hence why most ppl just go TPI/LT/LS-1
And when you get to the amount of power a gen 2/3 engine makes stock with a tbi your gonna kiss MPG goodbye so might as well either
A) go carb setup and spend LESS or B) go full fuel injection and do more work to get it done and KEEP good mpg/hp ratio.
Guess it's just what you want to spend. You could get a 283 or 327 engine for a few hundred bucks and put upgrades in it and it would spank ALOT of 350's. A stock '67 327 with a 4bbl carb had 350hp and 360ft lb's, 11:1 compression and it would blow the doors off an lt1.

| Already running a bigger cam, its about a c hair different from the LT1/LT4 cam.
The stock TBI heads flow at 175cfm, the summit aluminum ones flow at 240cfm. That's going to be a hell of a boost. My tuner can adjust accordingly. Even if I need to bump up the fuel pressure, it's not a problem to drop in an LT1 fuel pump.
