Turbo Engine Empty
PostSubject: Turbo Engine   Turbo Engine EmptySun May 10, 2009 7:33 am

First and foremost I want to thank Jason and Chris for all the help with the install and buildup of the new turbo engine in my 96 Impala. There is no way I could have done this without these two. I started during Feb removing the entire nose of the car, engine, six speed and differential. Sandblasted the differential, primed and painted, new cover, all new seals, bolts, emergency brake rubbers, emergency brake cables, stainless steel brake lines, new calipers, pads and reinstalled. While the drivetrain was out I removed all heat shields, sanded and painted underneath the body then sanded and painted all shields, crossmembers, bolts ect. The 355 was built just for turbo application. The 355 and six speed was installed on May 2nd and the turbo setup on May 9th. My many thanks to "Scott" for the many hours of work in upgrading the engine harness. I want to thank Bob Noble of Peotone Il who has been powder coating parts for me over the last two years for this project. Jeff from Sebago Lake Chevrolet will reinstall the nose, hoping this upcoming week. With the nose back on we will be able to close up all the loose ends which I am sure there are many. There is light at the end of the tunnel! Today I will clean up the garage and prepare for this week as I have to order more bolts and gaskets, install AC lines, heater core lines and so on. Once we are able to do the initial startup I will transport the Impala to a local shop for exhaust fabrication. In closing I again want to thank Jason, Scott, Chris, Larry Jr, Bob and Jeff, without you guys this project would have never got done.
Very respectfully,
Larry

Since those pictures were taken on Saturday I have installed the new A/C lines, green hoses and the core support. Jeff from Sebago Lake Chevrolet body shop told me he will have the nose installed by Saturday evening! He will mount, block and paint the "Ram Air" hood once the car is up and running. At this very moment he is painting the inner fender wells. I am waiting for a couple of critical fuel system parts from Chevrolet, had to order from VPI so they are ocming UPS or pony express, one of the other as I order the parts seven days ago today. With the nose on I can then start mounting all the inner fender items. Still quite aways off but getting closer each day. Once the turbo exhaust is completed to the cats I will strap her to a car dolly and take her to a local shop where they are going to fabricate the pipes. Then, it's a lot of praying for that initial start up!
As I stated in my first post, this major make over would not have been possiable without Jason, Scott and Chris. My many thanks to these men for all the help and putting up with my bitching. We will keep you posted as the next few weeks pass. Hope to be driving soon and making a visit.

Just returned home from Chevrolet as my parts arrived from VPI. One part I ordered was a MAP sensor plug, this is a very small red plastic plug that goes under the MAP sensor. Looks like a small cap used to cap ends of new brake lines. I was shocked to find out it cost $10.25! Anyways, that is installed witht the MAP sensor now. Received the small rubber plug for the throttle body, installed. Received new forward fuel rail crossover pipe and attaching brackets. Just painted with high temp silver to match everything else. So this evening I can install the fuel rails and injectors. While at Chevrolet I visited the body shop. Jeff finished the inner fender wells last evening. As Chris would say, "they look sweeeet"! Jeff is planning on this weekend to install the fenders, inner fender wells and the Ram Air hood. She will look different then. I am getting there. Will keep you all updated. Also, thanks for the kind words.

So this is where you've been hiding. lol. I'm installing a tach in my bezel today for the 9C1 and trying to locate some front coil spring isolators since there on back order through RMS for the B4U. Front rebuild kit is in the mail also without the a-arm bushings. I should know by now that they may not be in stock. Good to see that your turbo plans are coming along Larry, looking good. What do you figure your top speed is going to be? Hope to see you all soon. Tom

Well I am figuring the top speed is going to be about very fast! I am getting so darn excited. Today I didn't acocmplish much as I was again searching for parts. I purchased one or two wrong ones so back to the drawing board. Jason is coming over tomorrow so I am in great hopes of another fantastic and productive day. Hoping to get her ready for a ride on the car dolly to the exhaust shop next week. Body shop is going to install the nose on Sunday being we are going to work on the engine Saturday. Next week I should have so more good news. I will have to email pictures to Chris for posting as I have all I can do just to type. Or is there someone I can send them to directly?

Next year I will be loosing my contact at local Chevrolet dealershiip where I am able to purchase parts at a huge savings. Sebago Lake Chevrolet located Windham, Maine got their visit from the UPS driver this morning. They have been a family owned Chevrolet dealership prior to WWII. GM states that there are far to many dealerships, causing people to shop for the lowest cost. With less dealers they say the cost of new cars will bring a greater profit to those dealerships remaining. I guess all the years and memories don't count.

OK, Saturday is now officially over and I will update you on what was completed today. Today was Jason and I working as a fine tuned team! Under the vehicle I finally got all the new emergency brake cables installed properly this time! While resting on my butt under the car I decided to complete the transmission to include 4.1 quarts of fluid. Jason did not want me out from under the car so we attached some exhaust parts and then we worked on the oil supply line for the turbo. The oil lines that Jason built for this car is nothing but the finest. Jason gave me a sneak preview of my center console as he is installing my 12 way seat controler behind the shifter, looking awesome! Jason also completed the wire harness for the seats as that needed updating and some repairs. Oh yes, Jason didn't like how the new stainless brake lines were positioned beneath the turbo so out come a few of his fancy tools and now they look as if they belong in a Lamborghini. What in God's name would I do without Jason? Really, I own the car, not Jason!
Tomorrow morning bright and ealry Jeff Heacocke from Sebago Lake Chevrolet will be on scene installing the fenders, newly painted inner fenders, Ram Air Hood and grill and bumper support. She will take shape fast now! This coming week I am praying to have her on a tow dolly heading for the exhaust shop. Couple more strong weekends and I will be ready for initial startup! Pictures soon. Thanks guys for listening to me rave, I am proud of the car as well as indebeted to Jason, Scott, Chris, Jeff and my son Larry Jr.

OK Sunday is over with and here is another update! Jeff "The body Man" arrived early this morning and to work we went. By early afternoon we had both fenders, inner fenders and the new Ram Air hood installed. We will wait to attach the front bumper after all the engine work is completed. Larry jr and Mark Ross stopped by after attending Bonny Eagle car show, they were such a big help today, drank coffee and gave me advise then left! It was great to see both of them! After everyone left I started attaching more items to the inner fender wells, missing a few clips so to Chevrolet tomorrow, again! I am so tired and hurting after the last two days, it will be a hot shower, take some good meds and off to bed! Pictures should be coming soon as I have sent some out for posting.
Be safe my friends,
Larry

Chris, thanks for helping out with the photos. Today I didn't get one thing accomplished due to a medical condisiton, tomorrow is another day. I at least went out to the garage where I sat on a stool and talked dirty to her! She knows I will be back to rub her belly tomorrow! Guys, I want to thank you all for the great words, encourgement and positive remarks. Heck one other forum I am attached to I would have all kinds of nasty remarks. I enjoy this group as everyone is there for one another. Mark, yes I will go to next mod day with you, just let me know when and where. If the Impala is up she will go, if not we will take the John Deere Gator as we can hall parts in the back, sound good!

Feeling a bit better today so I was back in the garage. Since Jeff installed the fenders on Sunday I have installed the powder coated fender support rods, window washer tank, radiator overflow tank, cruise control, all the A/C and radiator hoses, fuse box, powder coated battery tray, ecm tray, ecm, A/C condenser, BeCool radiator, fans, powder coated grill frame and attached wires that I could find a home for. She is really looking good. Really need to work on the exhaust, tubo piping, mounting the oil cooler, oil lines and only God knows what else. I am hoping for an initial startup in about two weeks or so. I am so tired of soaking, scraping, sanding, priming and painting nuts and bolts! Will keep you updated.

Larry, Jay and myself had a full Saturday of work. Not only did I get to swap out my rear end (Many thanks to Larry for all his help) but I was able to swap out Jays Old and Improved control arms LOL (If any body knows Jay he always has something up his sleeve!!! LOL) While Larry and I were doing that Jay was able to run Larry’s oil lines. This took most of the day since he had to basically build them from scratch using nothing but the best fittings and steel braided hose. So here are the pictures. Plus as you can see Larry has been a very busy worker bee getting all the incidentals put back on the car as well.

Thought I would take a moment and update you guys as to what's going on with the Impala. On June 14th my son and I loaded her on a car hauler and took her to Ma. There Scott and Jason are cleaning up some last minute issues with wiring and other modifications. Once she is finished I will bring her back to Maine and then I have to have most of the turbo exhaust fabricated. The turbo kit for the Impala is for an automatic transmission only, will not fit the T56. Not a major setback but enough. Once Mike completes the fabrication I will send the turbo exhaust to Airbourne Coating. With the exhaust completed and coated then it's to the Sebago Lake Chevrolet for the hood to be painted and the car buffed out. There is light at the end of tunnel! Bill, thanks for the lines, I gave them to Jason all ready so they can be modified. I want to thank all of you for the kind words and support during this ordeal. I am hoping once she is finished this time I can leave it alone. I would like to say no more mods but I think that is not going to happen. I will see if I can get some pictures added as she left Maine and when she returns. Take care and be safe.

Once the bugs are worked out you'll have to show it off at NED next year. Can't wait to see it in person.

No Moa is correct! My registration plate also shows Ten-33. My wife thinks I should have put Ten-44, "mental subject". Wishing all of you dad's out there a wonderful father's day. Take care my friends.

Here are a couple of pics with Larrys' ride on the way to Scotts. I'm sure Larry will chime in.

During this trip to MA I got the best MPG and the engine was so darn quiet I couldn't hear it! I am so excited to know she will be on the road some time this summer.

OK boys, it's June 30th and I just received great news from MA! Though it has been raining non stop for what seems ever, Scott and Jason has been able to complete some of the wiring modificaitons between the rain drops. The really great news is all the wiring is completed in the engine bay and the car started at the very first turn of key. Started it went into a smooth idle! I am so darn excited to say the very least, I should say releive. Every night I have laid in bed wondering, did we do this did we do that, what was the torque on the flywheel, did I install that pipe? There is light at the end of the tunnel! Once other issues are addressed sh will come home for fabrication of the turbo exhaust so I can get it sent out to Airbourne coating. While the exhaust is being completed it will be time to have the front bumper installed, trim installed and ram air hood painted. I am praying to drive her this summer yet! When I pick her up I will post more pictures. The wife said this morning she thought I was more excited about Scott's email then I was on the day we got married thirty years ago. Told her thirty years was far to long ago for me to recall.

Well I the Impala is getting there, running great and closing up a few more eletrical issues with new harnesses for the twelve way seats and directional mirrors. Two slight problems will have to be addressed when she returns home in two weeks, for one the SECOND red Opti battery is no good. Purchased the original at VIP auto, that lasted about 18 months, replaced it free as it would not hold a charge. This one doing the very same, with a full charge it holds just over 11 volts, not good. The Opti battery goes for $169.00! I ordered a new factory OEM AC Delco from Chevrolet today for $90.00. Secondly when we built up the new turbo long block I purchased all new accessory parts from Chevrolet, wanted nothing used. Well the new 140 amp alternator no worky, should have left the old black one in place. the alternator failure might have been caused by me as I did apply several coats of high temp clear so to keep it looking new. Will not do that again either. Chevrolet said no problem they will replace that also for me seeing I have spent mucho dollars there and GM is closing their doors. The good news is the engine runs great, on initial start she started as if she had just been shut off ten minutes ago. Started and settled into a smooth idle. I just can't wait to finish her up and drive it. Of course even if she was completed where in God's name would I drive, I would have to install some floatation devises. As soon as she is completed I will attend some mod days.
