So would anyone be up for a "House Mod Day/BBQ/Pool Party" at my house?

I could sure use some help building a deck for my pool and replacing some of my stockade fence! There's like 10-12 sections of fence that need replaced and I'd like to build a 8'x12' deck around the pool.

I'll supply the food and drinks and most tools. You supply appetites, labor, and bikin-clad wimmens.

Seriosuly though, would anyone wanna come help me out? Think of it as a pool party BBQ with a little manual labor...

After reading the poll options I am having second thoughts. We have to wear a bathing suit and swing a hammer? What kind of bathing suit? And who's hammer are we swinging? Cause as much as I like you Crono, I don't like you in that way

And if you could bring your own tools, things would move faster. I have the basics, and duplicates of most, but if you all bring your own, then there will definately be enough tools so that everyone can work instead of waiting for a hammer or drill or saw...

I know this weekend doesnt work. I need to pick up my daughter from camp Sat.
Until you pick a weekend I cant have my scheduler (wife) tell me if I can....I mean check the calender for openings.
Only thing that sucks is carrying tools means its the 95 again.

I don't mean for you to bring table saws and the like... I was thinking more along the lines of hammers, tape, and cordless drills.

I've got a big box of decking screws that i'll never use i'll dig them out.

I can hook you up on materials! As for putting it together, that's why I'm into cars not decks.

So what works best for you guys? This Saturday the 8th, Next Saturday the 15th, or the following Saturday the 22nd? This Saturday or the 22nd would be best for me, as I can use the Friday before to dig out the holes and pour the cement for the deck supports.

This is awesome guys. Really, it is.

I would dig 4 3' holes. And drop about 4 inches of concrete in the bottom of each hole the day before. Then once the main skeleton is bulit. Pour concrete around the uprights to about 4 inches below grade, and backfill with dirt. At that point You can continue to build the deck. The weight of the concrete will keep it from moving. F-it, Also it is good to coat the 4x4s in tar or bed liner or undercoat where they will be in the ground. Just the sides though. Leave the bottoms uncovered.

They also sell the anchors that support the posts ABOVE the ground so the posts never contact anything that will degrade them. You set them right in the column before it sets. I assume your using pressure treat for joists & posts. What are you using for the decking?

Thinking about using the new style that sit on blocks and don't need holes dug. Floating-foundation decks. I need to look into local building codes first though. My stepfather is trying to convince me to go that route.

And yes, I plan on PT posts and frame. Would like to us the Trex (or similar) for decking, but that may be cost prohibitive.

Yup. Wife and kids welcome. Girlfriends, fiances and whoever else, too.

That system looks like a leveling nightmare but if your yard is somewhat flat & hard its doable. I do HATE digging holes & mixing tons of concrete so Bills footing suggestion is the best for that. Code? I dont know. Wouldnt fly in my town but our building inspector builds everything for hurricanes. As long as you know what you want & have the supplies. 22nd would be best for me, think I have a concert out on that side of the state that night anyway, so it would be dope for me and the lady.

I have all the basic hand tools, as well as drills, banana hammock, circ. saws, levels, all kinds of shit, I do carpentry part time to fill the gaps.

Make it the 22nd since that one involves you getting it started before we get there. I like to finish projects other people started and then take the credit

Plus I'm not good around concrete and the like. I'm not patient enought to let it dry and such

Well, it's looking more and more like I'm going to use the floating deck system so NOBODY has to dig, mix and pour concrete. It supposedly meets all state and local codes, except in NJ, so it should be good. I'm going to call town hall tomorrow to be sure.

They are #8 2 1/2 inches with a no rust coating.
About 1 hundred give or take.

How high is your pool? Or should I say, how high is the deck? You want your 4x4 upright deck posts 36" above the finish decking.

I dont have a nail gun but I bet Home Depot rents.
Pressure treated isnt happy unless you pre-drill anyway.

48" high on one side & 52" high on the other

It was a good day. It was a hot phucker tho! Good thing we had the pool to jump in when we overheated! We only got interrupted by two thundershowers, but they were gone as soon as they showed up. Well, the lunchtime one stuck around long enough to completely drench me while grilling in the rain...

So we ended the day yesterday with the full frame up and all the 4x4 supports and footings in place. Now I just gotta put the floor joists in and the floor boards and I'll have a deck! Then the railings and the stairs.

So for all the guys that missed out yesterday, you can come by today or next weekend, as I'll still be working on it then.
