PostSubject: stock rear specs ?   Wed Feb 17, 2016 10:24 pm

I am seriously considering putting some 4.88s into my 9C1 and then maybe putting the 4.10s that are in it into my RMW. Before I buy the 4.88s I just want to make sure I remember correctly- I need gears for a 10 bolt 8.5" GM- am I good with that or are there any other specs I need to confirm?

Also- I seem to recall when I bought the 4.10s that they were from Precision Gear. Does that ring a bell? Did they change hands or go out of business? Can't find 'em anymore.

Thanks,

Spline? Just thought of that... 28 or 30 are possibilities IIRC?

8.5 10 bolt 30 spline (88 or 89+ have 30 spline)

Since you mentioned spline, don't forget that the 9C1 axels are shorter than an SS or regular non 9C1 Caprice. If you for some reason wanted to order them too.

Thanks for the axle info,

So I asked this guy- "Hi there, are these 28 or 30 spline?"

and he replied- "That will be carrier based, not gear based. Gears will work with either."

I don't believe that to be true........ but then again I've been out of the scene for a while. Is he right?

Thanks for the help.

The 4.88 seed has been planted........ it is probably inevitable now...........

I just have to remember everything I forgot about the swap..........

The drive shaft turns the pinion. Pinion turns the gear. Gear is bolted to the carrier. Carrier turns axels. Think about it.

What size tire are you running? 225/75's? That engine is gonna be screaming at 65-70 mph.

Your guy would be correct, the splines are carrier based since the axles engage the carrier, the ring gear is just bolted to the carrier.

235/70s. Yup, about 3k @ 70. It's turned into more of a toy than a daily driver. Should be fun around town and at New England Dragway and it will keep me from speeding on the highway. Smile It's programmed to shift at 6k, and with 4.88s it would be just about to shift into 4th going through the traps.

Super un-practical, I know, but the extremist part of me just feels like it needs to be done. Smile

I'm talking about the splines on the pinion gear. Or are they all the same? Seems to me I remember that could be either 28 or 30 also? No?

Splines refers to axles. Rear gears are comprised of the ring and pinion gears.

I guess I'm not explaining myself very well- I'm talking about the splines on the front end of the pinion gear shaft where the yoke goes on. I put the 4.10s in my 9C1 myself but that was 100,000 miles ago and I forgot most of what I learned on that project.

Thanks for the info.

Just to clear this up an 8.5 GM 10 bolt take the 30 spline pinion
The 7.5 GM 10 bolt takes the 27 spline pinion.
