PostSubject: A trip to the dark side. Now I have a Storm Trooper   Wed Nov 11, 2015 7:32 pm

So every time I found a Tahoe, or Suburban 2000 or newer, it was either sold, or I could not get an answer, or whatever. So I took a trip to the dark side after I found this mint running 2001 Ford Expedition with a 4.6 V8. It makes a great beater with a heater, and it is roomy. I would have prefered a GM product, but this thing runs so good. I just have to fix some rust, figure out why the turn signals do not work, and drive it. It is AWD and gets about 13 mpg, but for what I paid for it, who cares. Drives like a new truck. There was mention that it came from a wife of a Ford Tech.

Well it runs and drives like a new truck, so somebody had to know a mechanic. It did not get this far in life without it. LOL

Nice score. I always liked the Expeditions.

My father in law had an F150 that vintage that kept having spark plug blowouts. Hopefully thats not a common issue.

Oh my. I didn't even know you could get the 4.6 in an expedition. Must feel very... economical. Wink Must make the painfully slow turdburban feel like a rocketship... Smile

You gonna paint it like a Jurassic Park Explorer?

I also was looking for a Tahoe / Suburban while I was down south last winter. It was a pain in the rear to put all our stuff, a big dog and us for the 3 months that we're gone in a Grand Marquis. Didn't find a Suburban with decent miles and price. I stumbled onto a 2003 Lincoln Aviator; fair price, good condition and 107K. I drove it home. So far, so good. After joining a Ford Explorer forum, I found out that they have timing chain and tranny problems; but so don't B bodies.

Oh I did notice there is no problem finding these at junkyards. The Pick and Pull in Candia has probably 10 Expeditions and atleast the same for Explorers and Mountaineers.

Those Aviators are nice. The Cobra motor helps a lot. Wink Interior is pretty, too!

My friend had an aviator, I liked it, the interior was almost white including the carpet and I was afraid to sit in the thing.
I remember when the Expedition came out and was at the car show in Boston, my father said the wheel wells would rot out because of the lip, haha. Yet you usually see them rotted in the rockers and stuff. I'd rather have the 4.6, I think the Triton engines are much more troublesome with spark plugs shooting out and manifold bolts breaking. I'd drive the hell out of that truck Billy.

You are right Bill, that is a great motor, 300 HP. Interior is real nice also. The previous owner had an aftermarket radio installed, unfortunately hacks installed it, so there was probably a 5 or 6 small covers and panels that I had to replace because of broken clips etc. But with the abundance of Explorers and Mountaineers in the yards made replacing easy.

Your right about the carpet Matt. As for the rot, bought it in Jacksonville, FL. It won't be seeing any winters.

We actually drove it for the first time to put gas in it tonight since I installed the new rockers, and replaced the turn signal lever. All I can say is that I can not see parting with this truck as a winter ride. It probably gets 13-15 mpg, but it rids so nice. Has the same torsion bar front suspension found in the GM trucks. I really wanted a GM product, but this is a great second choice. I think it may need a ac compressor soon, as something in the drive accessories is a bit loud. I just need to get a remote start, and maybe a plow, and the Storm trooper will be ready for winter.
