Possibly looking for L99 Empty
PostSubject: Possibly looking for L99    Possibly looking for L99 EmptyWed Apr 29, 2015 12:56 pm

Need info on the 4.3 L99 engine. Did searches all morning on the Internet and all I got was "it's got no power" or "no performance parts" "go with lt1, its FAAAAST" etc etc.

What I wanna know is what people are seeing for MPG (I mean real numbers)

I currently have a 4.3 TBI in the s10. 160hp and seeing 22.5/23mpg (real numbers calculated at the pump)

I do NOT want an lt1 and I don't give a shit about performance or winning races/going fast.
Is it worth swapping in an extra 2 cylinders? Or does the L99 get worse mileage than what I'm currently seeing?
And before anyone says it no I don't want a 2.2l s10. I specifically avoided those engines due to finicky head gaskets

L99 is smoother, makes better power more efficiently, and can get slightly better MPG than the already good 6-hole 4.3L Vortec.

More total valve area per CI (In & Ex), an overall better solution, no split journal crank pins, funky odd-angled distributor firing intervals or clever rotating weight adding steps required to "fix" unavoidable balance issues due to the bank angle being 90° instead of the ideal 60°.

It was also the base 9C1 engine. The 5.7L (LT1) option had to be ordered seperately.

If you're going to do all that work and want economy, why not go with a 4.8l LS. They're dirt cheap at yards.

$$$$ and time. i bet I could get a 4.3 for under $300 if not free, what's a 4.8 go for? i bet it won't bolt up to my nv3500 trans. Which then needs to be replaced $$$$.

It's a daily driver which means it must be back together on a Monday if I start something on a Saturday.
Not trying to re invent the wheel here, just get better fuel and maybe a v8 rumble out the tail pipes.
