Well what to do Empty
PostSubject: Well what to do   Well what to do EmptyWed Mar 11, 2015 5:28 pm

Bought this truck today after crafting the deal over a 3 month period. Now what do I do? First of all it's in Gilford and I need to get it hauled to my place in Weare. Anyone got a heavy truck and trailer? Or rollback? I can pay you.

I bought it as a parts truck, but it's very fixable. Needs a crank sensor. It has some wear and tear, was owned by a boat yard and used for plowing and local trips. Could be worth it, truck only has 60k miles. Otherwise, I could part it out but that might require heavy equipment.

I would fix it, and flip it. And it will fit on a regular flatbed truck to tow if you have to.

Yea I've decided to flip it. Frame is still solid, and cab only needs rocker panel to be good. At this low mileage, it's worth good money.

Tried that last fall, they actually wanted to see my registration and verified it to my VIN, guess they're catching on.

I figured it might tip them off when they see the missing front end.

Better, 8.1L. It's worth alot more running and in one piece, however. Arrow

I have the basic AAA coverage anyways so it wouldn't save me a whole lot.

Put an ad on Craiglist "sold as is , where is". Smile

I'm guessing that anyone that has trailer probably has it buried under 3 or 4 feet of ice and snow and there's 30-40 feet of more ice and snow between it and their driveway.

So much potential!

That 8.1 is worth a lot to the right guys and I have a buddy that would buy the tranny as a spare if the price was right and 4wd....

I assume it is a stripper, but I need a driver door window switch and a few other little things if you part it out....I was gonna buy a parts truck myself for those few things

Well it's in my driveway now. Got a company out of Franklin to bring it down for $200. Not bad. Guy delivered it around 830ish, he said he was running all night because of the forecast for ice tomorrow.

So now I have a bigass dually in the driveway. Gotta order up the crank sensor and see if I can finish the job my buddy started.

Yea Jim, everyone but me. I've kept my trailer clean and ready to go all winter, came in handy a few times.

The truck is pretty basic, not even AC! But it does have 4WD, it did have a plow as well but that's gone. Still worth 8K running and driving however.

If you do, make it a white long bed truck and consider the bed sold! If it were to have power doors even better for you because those would be sold too! (even without the switch) Arrow

Get the plow stuff together and mounted then keep it for next winter. 8.1s are raped apes when pushing snow. I jumped in the yard truck at work after a storm and the plow team needed help, holy shit that thing can move snow.

Well what to do Empty
PostSubject: Re: Well what to do   Well what to do EmptySun Mar 15, 2015 2:24 pm

Nice truck.

I've had a 2002 8.1L Dually from new, and put an Arctic V-plow 3 yrs ago, great plow truck.

Looks like your's has got the narrow commercial body specific AAM/11.5" rear in it.
The std long bed may not clear the inner tires, as the bed"s wheel humps are spread wide to accommodate 4 feet of width.
It also should have an Allison trans and 262/3 XHD T-case.

Those trucks are prone to certain problems, so if you plan to keep it look for ...

(1) Rotted brake lines, I recommend changing every pipe over to InLine Tube's all SS pipes w/ SS nuts, if it hasn't already been done. (Perfect fit)

(2) Oil leaking from:
- A) engine oil cooler lines and fittings
- B) T-Case - lube-pump wear-plate digs into rear case and pukes oil.
You can buy an upgraded solid aluminum case half w/HD wear plate to solve the leak issues. The OEM case is weaker/lighter magnesium alloy.

(3) For some reason GM switched from 3/8" to 8mm studs for the exhaust manifold to head connection, and these studs are extremely prone to snapping off.
The best fix I could come up with was to remove ALL 16 OEM studs, and install ARP stainless steel studs (made for a Porsche app) so if you need the exact part number, let me know.

(4) Cam sensor failure, impossible to purchase the replacement part, OEM or aftermarket! The trick here is to search non-automotive specific marine supply parts sources (Mercruiser)
(5 ) Crank sensor is no picnic to replace, as it is located at the rear of the engine over the bell housing doghouse.
The engine will start and run with no cam sensor in it, but will sometimes be glitchy - meaning it won't start up immediately and/or smoothly.

(6) These trucks have questionable steering tie rod strength/durability and center-linkage geometry, but the aftermarket has stepped up and fixed that problem.

I went through 4 sets of inner/outer rod ends and two idler pivots before switching over to the expensive yet super tough Rare Parts and Kryptonite upgrades.

(7) If you plow, you'll need the most heavy duty torsion bar GM makes, these trucks NEVER came from the factory with them, over the counter only. If interested, I'll get you the GM #s

Also buy Timbren front suspension snubbers, the stock ones are junk.

Bilstein silver front and yellow/blue rear shocks, way better than OEM dampers.

This 8.1L BBC uses the same ignition and firing order as the LS 6.0L engine, and it will benefit from having the latest ECM computer updates installed.

(8 ) These trucks are also somewhat prone to early failure of the front wheel bearing, I've found authentic Timken units to be very good. (BTW, watch out for counterfeit Timkens from asia)
Look for ABS lights, where the rusty bearing debris accumulates around the sensor magnet.

I think you'll be pleased if you decide to keep this truck, they ride excellent, have great power, great looks and they work hard.
Everyone's got their preferences (Dodge vs GM vs Ford), but I bounce between Ford F350 4X4 at work and GM K3500 at home, so I get a daily reminder of the differences.

The Fords do have better brake feel though, and the T-case is supposedly a step up in durability, but the GM truck has options for future T-case upgrades if required.

Got the old one out, took some ingenuity.

I am a bit sad that this engine won't be making it's way into the C10. Oh well, plenty of 4.8 and 5.3's out there
