PostSubject: Rattle in rear suspension   Thu Sep 04, 2014 5:40 pm

I'm sure this is something that's outlined on the big board (I've been looking) but I'll post anyway to see if anyone's had the same crap happen on their car...

About a week ago, I had the SS up on some jackstands and undid the pass. side shock/lowered the axle so I could get the sway bar bracket out because I had to replace the hardware for that side, it had the wrong bolts in it and the bar was making noise over bumps.  I fixed it, sway bar is solid, etc.

A few days later my car developed a noise that is now coming from the driver's side of the rear suspension when that wheel goes over bumps. It's a loud-ish rattle/clank/"clack" sound.  It wasn't doing this before, so I don't know if I shook or moved something I shouldn't have when I was working on it.

I haven't had the chance to deal with it properly just yet, but I did have time to back it up on some ramps and see if I could make it do the noise.  I hit the sway bar, shocks, and the LCAs with a rubber mallet, the shocks both made a slight rattle but I don't know if that's the issue because the both sounded the same to me.  The bar makes no noise, nor do the brackets in the LCAs that it bolts to.  On the driver's LCA, if I whack the end of it that bolts to the frame of the car (front of LCA) I seem to notice a little rattle/vibration like it's worn out there or something like that, but it almost doesn't sound like it's the likely culprit.  I don't know.

Another thing I noticed is that my d/s exhaust, on the back of the muffler, the 2 pins that stick out to go into the exhaust hanger are in fact not in the rubber exhaust hanger on the car, lol.  However, that whole bank of the exhaust system is solid, or seems to be, I can't move it, it's fastened to the rear frame rail and didn't seem to jostle around or make any rattle noises.  I was still curious if that could be hitting something over bumps.

When it rains and I drive the car, the noise is a hell of a lot quieter if there at all, I noticed.  When it's hot and dry like today it sounds awful and drives me nuts! It's a quick singular "clack" noise, one noise, not repeated rattles that die out a few seconds after a bump. From the sound of it, you'd think it would be clear whatever is doing it when you climb under the car and take a look, but I can't replicate it! Laughing

I have somewhat of the same issue in the rms. I've been under there a few times recently. My $ is on heat shields.

Also check the exhaust clearance on the shocks / springs as it goes OTA
If the tail is able to move, the contact may happen then
Exhaust shields are usually either attached...or not.
It is a very common thing but you'll know the second you interrogate them. Smile
All your body mounts intact?

Heat shields or the isolator for the rear coil springs moved or vanished.

I have a loud clank when I turn the cougar, but that's because he sway bar end link rotted away and I don't care about it. At all.

^LOL Matt...

One of the first things I did was toss the heat shields on this car...they are entirely deleted. The tailpipe doesn't move when I try to rock it back and forth, it has that American Thunder system with the long chrome tailpipes. I might unbolt the pipe at the rear frame rail and lower it/try to get it into the rubber hanger.

I took the car into Boston over the obviously terrible roads/pavement...the noise was pretty loud and worse. I want it to get worse so I can have a better idea of what it is!

I have new Bilsteins and upper shock mounts for this car, I should probably just put them in just in case it's the shock.

It's so annoying!

I've heard e-brake shoes can cause this, but it kind of sounds like the noise isn't of that variety...it could be I suppose. The e-brake works great by the way, engages and releases, holds the car, etc.

Does it sound like an old school "screwed on in the center that I don't have the fucking key for" hubcap rattling?

It's the sway bar bolts.

I'm going to screw with it tomorrow and check all those, they are new but I suppose the driver side ones could have backed out from me bending the pass. side down when I was replacing them over there, etc. They are not bolted into that welded in nut in the bracket with a lock washer, and that side of the bar did seem to be solid when I banged on it with the mallet and pulled on it.

I finally got a moment to mess with this...in the dark...as per usual. D/S upper shock mount bolt's nut is half backed off and wicked loose kehd, so I hope that's the noise. I was going to put my Bilsteins and those upper shock u-bolt things in this car but I think I'll just tighten that up and see if the noise stops.
