PostSubject: Leaking T-Stat   Wed Jul 23, 2014 8:58 pm

So about a week after I got the motor running the T-stat housing sprung a leak. NBD, clean up, dry it out, fresh RTV and a new gasket. Leaked again within a couple days. Before I go for time #3 and head off for wagonfest, can someone tell me the best way to seal this up? RTV+Gasket? RTV only? Gasket only? Housing isn't cracked, and isn't warped.

Get some plumbers teflon paste. Put it on the both sides of the gasket, and around the outside edge of the thermostat itself. Install housing and tighten down. Good luck with your trip, and enjoy WF2014.

you removed the old gasket from housing and intake with a new razor blade correct?
I always do red RTV and paper gasket. Torque bolts down to spec. Let it dry before running.

An aside to this, because I don't a'membah if you used one or not, but chrome water necks are notorious for seeping/leaking at the intake...I've never heard of one that didn't.

My car had one of the kind that used a rubber gasket under it back when I got it, I took it off. I need to put a different one on though because the replacement neck I got turned out to be a cheap Chinese one when it arrived, the casting looks terrible.

I've always used indian head shellac on those types of gaskets without problems. My 92 came with one of those reusable aluminum gaskets too and never leaked, they sell those in the performance parts section at AZ.

Yes.

Cool. Home cheapo had a small tube. How long does that stuff take to set up? It's been on about an hour now.

Never heard of Indian Head. I'll have to look into it if this leaks again. I saw that gasket, I didn't know if it was actually good or it was just snake oil

No set up time. It stays soft, hardens slightly.

The hits keep coming. Used the paste, nice and leak free. But now the car is getting hot. Almost like the t-stat isnt opening. I have a feeling I got some of that crap in the T-stat now.  Mad Surprised A-zone doesn't have any 180's in stock so it looks like I wont be making it up there in the Caprice.
