Reman power steering pump suppliers Empty
PostSubject: Reman power steering pump suppliers   Reman power steering pump suppliers EmptyThu Jun 19, 2014 8:47 pm

So I asked this question on the National forum, but I will ask here as well.
I need to purchase a reman ps pump. Every car part store sells them. None have them in stock. All run between $50-60 with a $30 core. The big question is who has the most reliable unit based on actual member purchase? Autozone, Advanced, Napa, Oriley's, Pep Boys? Or even something I have not thought of.
The pump whines, and gets loud when turning.
I see they all sell rebuild kits. Is this a reasonable option to just rebuild it myself? Or is it just something that should be left to the pros?

Thanks.

Is the rebuild kit a can of satin black or gloss black?

I bought a reman delco from rock auto. It whined at first but that went away. You can also send yours out to lee manufacturing for a rebuild, their recommended on the big board.

Mine has sort of a minor whine constantly that changes with engine RPM. The steering ain't effected though. For now I'm going to try some stuff called "BG Power Steering Conditioner" that I've heard rave reviews about, it's worth a try. I read that much of the time if there is a whine it's because a miniscule amount of air has been allowed into the system by aging seals that might not leak fluid.

The fluid does also break down. I mean, has it ever been flushed? The newest B-body is old enough to vote... Just something to think about.

Try to FULLY flush the system(messy as a mofo!), add a filter (yes they exist), and if cooler isn't equipped already then pop that bish on there too!

Why throw darts if you can try to get it done in an afternoon for the price of fluid a filter and your time.

*this would be more for Matt's case than an actual pump issue.

This reminds me of a time I saw a kid replace his PS pump because it was whining, never did diag the issue. Turns out the thing had a quiet gear drive lol

Wow Matt. I am impressed.
I have already done a fluid change/flush a month or so ago, but the bearings in the pump are chattering, and the pump is whining, very loud, and hard to turn.
I decided to go with the Autozone unit, and both lines since they offered free shipping, 15% off, $10 gift card, one point toward my rewards, lifetime warranty, and after I return the core, it will be under $100 for the pump, and two new lines, and two quarts of fluid.  Very Happy

I would agree with Matt here. It's amazing what a PS system flush will do to quiet down the pump. I've done this to many Hondas I've bought and sold over the years, never had to replace a pump.

Hopefully the Autozone pump works out well. I'm usually wary of the Lifetime Warranty parts, because you usually end up using that warranty more often than not, but the $20 lifetime warranty starter on my C10 has been going strong for 5 years now.

Have fun replacing the high pressure hose from the pump to the box. Not. Wink

Pro-tip: Spray penetrating oil on the fittings daily until you replace. Start now. And.... Go!

After I posted I kind of figured you might have done that already. Just giving my $0.02 anyway lol

What a newb you are. A little penetrating oil, cut lines at fittings, socket and wrench to remove. Been there done that. That is why I got new lines. I have no plans of being nice to the old ones.  Wink

If that was my Impala I'd use the 9C1 PS lines. Smile

But it is not. It's a Caprice, so I will use a Impala ps line.

A week wasted for Autozone fail. I decided to give Autozone a try, and ordered one from them last week. It came in today, and I noticed back and forth play in it. I flushed the system again, and installed it anyways. It sounded like birds chirping when I gave it gas. Sounds like the bearings are no good. Put the old one back in, and still no improvement with the new lines, and fresh fluid. I guess it is time to give Rock auto a call, and get a reman Delco unit. Rolling Eyes
