Replacement distributor troubles. Empty
PostSubject: Replacement distributor troubles.   Replacement distributor troubles. EmptySat Apr 19, 2014 3:16 pm

So, finally tracked down the sources of the troubles in my 92 OCC. Popped off the distributor cap and found the sensor ring/pickup coil was trashed. So ordered up a new distributor from ebay and stabbed it in a couple of days ago. Car runs like a dream now, however a few issue cropped up after only driving 100 miles or so. I noticed the tach fluttering a couple times when cruising on the highway, car responded fine however. Also some noise and vibration coming thru the floorpan that wasn't there before. And it did cut out once and came back to life immediately. All these symptoms indicate to me a bad ignition module.....which sucks because that was part of the reason I bought a whole distributor!

Any thoughts before I buy a $80 AC Delco ignition module? One of my buddies is going to give me some CPU paste to use on the module to make sure it's properly heatsinked.

I put an aftermarket ign. module in my 1993 Blazer which was a 5.7 TBI. After that, the truck would stall three or so seconds after I came to a stop while in 'drive' at lights, etc. If I put it in neutral, it didn't happen. I wound up getting pissed and changed the whole distributor which solved the problem. I got a new complete one from a dealer, lol. For some reason it wasn't much more than when I found it online, it was a GMPP one.

A year or so later I threw the old dist. on CL as a parts unit or whatever and noticed that the AZ aftermarket module had a huge bubble in the shiny part on top. Apparently it was junk out of the box (I did follow procedure installing it with the heat sink grease and stuff). Looked online on forums and such and the common consensus was that many of the aftermarket modules were garbage for the TBI applications (same with aftermarket 02 sensors, etc.).
