Need an intake manifold from a 87/88 caprice with 305 or 350.
Might have been used on monte's and other gm vehicles with 305 or 350.
Maybe you know know a yard with a car in it?? Looking for it ASAP!
Cash or trade!!!! Let me know thanks!!

I'm guessing for a carb, not TBI? I think I scrapped all my carb intakes, I do have a tbi intake around.

Yes, for carb. Sorry forgot to mention that. I have 2 tbi intakes I want one for a carb. But more importantly I want one for a carb that came on an engine with centerbolt valve covers..... Think about that. Almost impossible to find.
Only year caprice to have it is 87/88. C-10's were tbi when the centerbolt's came in 87, I wanna say the Monte Carlo's 87/88 were also carb'd with the electronic controlled distributor. Don't follow f-bodies so I have ZERO idea there.
I had a stack of them. Like a wise young man once told me they are all now "sitting on a shelf at a walmart near you"

Yep I had a few iron 4 brl intakes but scrapped them all. All for older engines. When you can almost always find an Edelbrock intake for $20 on craigslist it doesn't make sense to keep the old boat anchor intake kicking around.

yes 87/88 V8 montes were carb'd as well. Hit ebay as the 305 HO had an aluminum intake manifold that shouldn't cost much to ship. Old stuff just doesn't exist anymore around here.

The Pontiac Grand Prix used a Chevy drivetrain, so it's possible the '87 used the centerbolt valve covers on the 305s?  The G-body GP stopped being made in 1987 while the Monte and Cutlass were still available in 1988 as RWD, although the Cutlass won't help you, lol.

Nothing in eBay I hit that and craigslist up first before posting here

I can find a million edelbrock intakes or old school cast iron intakes. I have found ZERO cast iron intakes for carb with the correct intake bolt positions. I have altered aluminum intakes to work in the past but I DONT like it and it looks very unreliable.
It's either
A- buy an aftermarket aluminum intake for $200
or
B- use a B/G body 87/88 intake for probably nothing $ wise.

I figured most ppl want to get rid of that system because it's probably the WORST configuration our cars ever got.

FWIW, there was no 4th gen Monte Carlo ever built with a 350 option. The ONLY exception to that was a strangely optioned South American export Monte Carlo that had a manual trans and a 350. The only other 350 offered was an olds(?) diesel. Other than that, base luxury models had a V6 standard and the SS had a 305 HO standard. Also, as far as I know and what I remember, there are no center bolt valve cover applications (stock) for this generation. My 87 has the bolt down ears or collars around the perimeter of the valve cover. Assuming you mean center bolt just like an LT1/L99. All I can think of is a 3rd gen F body TPI stuff has center bolt valve covers, but I think that won't have the intake you're looking for

Yea, I do believe there were no factory center bolt head engines with carbs, only TBI/TPI.

WRONG! My wife's 87 was carb'd and had centerbolt valve covers and my grey 88 that I sold my brother had a carb AND centerbolt valve covers. 87 was the first model year to see centerbolt heads. The trucks already started tbi that year but the caprice did NOT until 89. Both 87 and 88 have an electronic controlled quadrajet. I had an 87 Monte ss with the 305 but I can't remember what it looked like. I'm almost positive it was the same q-jet.

It could be that I'm looking for a caprice specific part then.
If my brother didn't sell the car I would've went and looked at it. The guy he sold it to already swapped in an ls1 motor.

http://www.superchevy.com/technical/engines_drivetrain/1401_how_to_swap_in_a_carb_equipped_ls_engine/photo_08.html

Also came in Monte Carlo 305 1987
Camaro 1987 only lg4 engine
El camino
Heavy duty trucks
Caprice 1987 1988
And I would say Cadillacs around the same year but the ones I've seen are all 307's. Not sure they came with 305 pre-90-92 style.

Ha, I was gonna ask whatever happened to that car. I test drove a Caprice that was carbureted, an 87. It had the centerbolt covers with carb also. Couldn't really tell it to be all that much different from a TBI when the air cleaner was on.

Hmmm. Well, my 87 SS has a 305 with a Rochester Quadrajet and no center bolt covers.

Factory engine? I'd bet money someone swapped the engine because the computer controlled carb set up is JUNK!
And if the block wasn't swapped perhaps just the heads and top end.

Those options are kinda stretching it. Why would someone swap heads on a 305? Whats the gain? Why on such a low mileage car? It appears that buying a 350 short block would be more effective both cost and performance wise.

Anyway, the below picture is a shot of the drivers side valve cover on my 87 monte SS with the 305 HO and computer controlled Quadrajet. Below that is another 87 SS from Hemmings with the same valve covers. However, I HAVE noticed while googling, center bolt valve covers on non TPI cars. It's a mystery to me at this point.

That's why I first stated probably a block change.
Is that pic from the areocoupe (is this the car we are talking about?)

Does it have a one piece rear main? Roller cam? Any info on casting numbers or suffix/date codes?

Now my interest is piqued. I have never seen a regular perimeter bolt valve cover on a post-86 car.

By electronic carb I don't want anyone getting confused with the q-jet that has the tps and iac on it.

I'm talking about the q-jet that came with the tps, iac, AND the computer controlled mixture solenoid it came from the factory with the distributor like in the 89-93 caprice. NOT the big coil top HEI.

I'll have to get castings numbers to you at a later date. But yes, it's the aerocoupe. As you know, I basically drove it and parked (abandoned) it down south, so I have not had much hands on.

Oddly enough, it's ignition is different from my old man's regular '87 SS. My ignition has the coil IN the cap. His was along side it. When I replaced it in 2007 tho, NAPA gave me exactly what I needed for year/make/model. So it can't be wrong. Maybe my dad's monte was wrong. Maybe it's another example of GM's famous "change shit on random cars in the middle of production."

Maybe this intake is close to what you need. Probably not tho.

A coil on cap AND perimeter valve covers definitely sound like an engine swap there. Your old man has the correct 87 setup (coil on the side with est) I'm wondering now if maybe your Monte has a 350 someone stuffed in there and not a 305??

That intake in the eBay link is just like every other intake I could find. I need one with the middle 4 bolt holes at the 72* angle. I have a bunch of the regular intakes I could machine out. But the last one i did made me real nervous awful thin in that area once the holes are elongated.

Ahhh! Oh, I C. I'm not sure I've ever seen one. You should hit up that swap meet with me Mother's Day weekend for some good parts finds.

As far as the engine swap, I don't think so. I cant see it. I know it's still a sbc, but everything, accessory, bracket, harness, emissions junk, is all the same as every other monte I've seen. All mounted and routed the same. That Hemmings picture is to the t, so to speak. I've since deleted the AC in favor of a newer R134 conversion I never got around to. How did napa give me the correct with generic parts store guy questions?

Confusing, but interesting and now I want to ship it here now. Otherwise I won't see it until July. I know Matt's 87 has the center bolt valves. The 84 had center bolt valves too, but it was TPI for whatever reason.

Also, I want to add that if this is the case, with the montes having the intake you need. There's a yard 10 minutes from me in norton that has about a dozen all grouped together. Most had engines last summer.

Base 305 in a Z28 or firebird was Carbed. I think to 88 or 89. As for the center bolt question. Some early 87s got the old style perimeter bolt valve covers. If you have a 87 built in 86 they may have been using left over engines. Chances are they were already assembled so there should be a 2 piece rear main seal. My old 87 IROC had a 86 style motor with a 5 speed. It was built in mid 86.

Get this guy to sell you his intake

http://nh.craigslist.org/pts/4346751087.html

Otherwise just pony up $50 for a used Edelbrock, unless your going for originality.

Also, you have a 93 FW dual fan setup?

I know, sorry dude. I never thought I'd see the day when someone actually WANTS one. No one wants those damn things.

swap meet eh? details?

Yeah the 84 had an 87 TPI 350 in it. Engine needs rebuilt the harness is in a box with the intake. I bet it has been destroyed as the 84 lived at Mirak for a year and a half long before I started working there and became a squirrel hotel. Everthing got some chewing  Surprised

My 87, just like all the 87/88 caprice's with the LG4 305 had a computerized quadrajet and centerbolt 87+ heads with the external coil for the distributor, NOT the big cap HEI. Any 87/88 will have the intake he needs. 89/90 was all TBI.

I already have a bunch of edelbrock intakes. They are all for perimeter bolt heads. I DON'T want to slot the bolt holes to make them work on this engine.

If you haven't done it then you wouldn't know what I'm talking about. The material removed make the intake very thin in that area and them you still have to come up with a spacer for the bolts to sit on so you can properly torque the bolts to spec.
A proper 87+ edelbrock intake for carb is $200+ I have never seen a used one for $50.

I don't care about originality. I just want a bolt on intake. I'd run a Q-jet carb if I can find one that is non electronic (70's carb) q-jet is the absolute best carb available.
Only ppl who know absolutely NOTHING about carburetor's think they are "quadra-junk" with properly maintained choke and adjustments they will destroy any edelbrock or Holley carb all day long.
I'm not building performance here, I just want the simplicity of the older style engines with the availability of the centerbolt accessories and dress up parts.

If anyone sees any boxy's in there yards take a peek and let me know. Also the f-bodies, g-bodies and a-bodies of the same year span.

No 93 FW fans.... Only 94-96. But they will work on any year radiator if you add the clip on mounts.

. . . . .

You may not love this suggestion, but it does work well enough.

Those heads are never going to be so valuable to anyone that it would be considered a criminal act to employ a street racer's short-cut in modifying them.

Its very easy, and I've seen this done multiple times on late 80s F-body and Vette sourced hydraulic roller cammed 350s.

Pull the intake thats on it now, stuff the valley up with towels and smear grease on the four inner holes.

Install the desired std 4 bbl intake with all 8 outer bolts, pre-drill the inner four with a 5/16ths drill bit, then run a greasy 3/8thsX16 tap into the existing holes to re-cut the threads.

Remove the intake, towels and grease that caught the debris and carefully clean out any remaining grease and/or particles,,,

Then put the thing back together and go have fun.

These bolts aren't intended to be gorilla tightened, as a good seal is more the result of correctly machined inter-component geometry, correct fitting high quality gaskets and Ultra-Grey sealer at the water crossovers.

You can always spend the bigger money for a proper aftermarket piece.

All 8 of my 88, 89 & 90 boxy Bs have center bolt V/Cs in both carbureted and TBI versions.

If you had much more time, I'm sure I could eventually get you one of the several intakes that I have on any one of the various 88 boxies out back.

Unfortunately they are still under snow and I'm forever swamped at work.

I don't think that Q-Jets are absolute hands-down destroyers of other brands or styles of 4 bbl carbs, but when class rules require them, they can certainly produce respectable, often formidable power under the curve.

For a street driven vehicle that has not been aggressively optimized strictly for competition usage, I believe the Q-Jet to be among the very best carburetor choices when seeking excellent power combined with reliable drivability.

That's actually a GREAT idea. I just got a 265/283/327 early edelbrock intake for free and I didn't want to mess it up with slotted holes. Are the gasket sets the same or will I have to get a pre-87 intake gasket set now?

As far as the q-jet I was strictly speaking of street driven economy/power vs a standard square bore Holley or edelbrock.
