PostSubject: Sand Blasting   Wed Jan 08, 2014 1:45 pm

I dont know how long its been since I got this cabinet but...I can finally sandblast small parts.

Cabinet sat for a while but I finally broke down & went thru it.

Field modded it so I could see & re-sealed some seams so it didnt make a terrible mess.

Just banged out a couple of parts to prep for powder cheers

Wonder how long before Matt has his N97's in there?

Razz

OK so its a small cabinet, has only a fine black beauty media (for now) & is run by a guy with a MORE than fulltime job.

 Razz

All I've done so far is strip remnants of a powdercoat finish (& a little rust) off a couple of welded tubes.

Powdercoat IS indeed tough but it left a nice prepped surface.

I plan on looking into other grades of media because 1 wheel would take to long as it stands now.

Matt may have that kinda time but not me.

I could always SELL this cabinet if someone had alot to do & wanted the convenience .... cheers

Its just that Harbor Freight special

I dont ever anticipate going BIG
The intent was to be able to do what Jim mentioned because we all know what a PIA wheels are to clean up
This cabinet was a cheap experiment
To do this right, I'd need a slightly to moderately bigger size
Will it ever happen?....I'm kinda liking it...we'll see

I'll tell ya, get a pot blaster, and a tent, if you got a 2 stage compressor that will run a pot blaster, you can do them all in a day. The cabnet blaster a take up so much space when you get to the big ones. We have 3 sizes, one the old man built years ago. Still works good, takes up huge basement space.

But then I need to get all suited up etc...nah
I have the space but not the desire.

I dont plan on using it on big projects or to make $

Just did 1 15" truck wheel front & back in like 20min
1/2 hour & it would have been a perfect completely uniform surface finish.
I wouldnt think twice sending this out to one of my powdercoaters as is
Going to try a crustier one later just for shyts & giggles

My back & trigger finger werent happy but whateva, I found a method that was liveable

Pretty tight moving it around but stood it up & rotated the work area into the spotlight I mounted inside.

Sifted the media before I started.

Havent opened the vacuum yet to see how much maintenance is required.

Also not sure how long before the gun starts plugging up & I need to re-sift. That was easy anyway.

Worst case, I'll have 1 of my guys do it.

Just finished my 4th wheel yesterday
2 were in great shape
2 of them were OK in the front but were EXTREMELY flaked in the back
I knocked the heavy flake off as much as possibke & had at it.
Wheels in THAT shape are alot of work (not difficult just time consuming)
Wheels like Jim shows...not so bad...(assuming thats not powdercoated)
Also (remember, I'm a sandblasting rookie) it appears the media breaks down becoming less aggressive.
I'm going to get some different materials & grades to try.
My powdercoater saiid he'd do the wheels & some parts Matt needs for free so I dont kow how much YET
I'll ask him.....after...Cool

Thanks Bill, I know thats what I have just not sure the grade yet.
I do know its becoming...extra fine.
Blasted some copper just to see what type of metal removal it did...next to nothing in this extra fine stage

So Matt, what grade did you use in your driveway?
That was MUCH more aggressive then what I'm spraying now.
I'm assuming you were medium grade for cutting?
Also what size tip was in the gun?

Grade: Can't remember but I can check the bag tomorrow afternoon. I believe it was the medium but IDK. I'll get back to you.

Tip size: That's a personal matter that I refuse to discuss on a family forum

OH! You meant of the sandblaster! I used whatever tip flowed the most, and it frequently got bigger as time went on. Not to mention HF didn't give me a label on the tips  Rolling Eyes I just wanted to cover as much area as humanly possible to get it done! You may want to experiment on your own with that.

I always use the fine, if you need the coarse, your doing something serious.

The place i get my stuff from just got in some Glass bead, i'm going to try that through the big blaster, Its not the stuff you get in a mini blaster, this is something different. I'm going to try it on my dump truck, probably when i'm 65.

I usually just pickup black beauty at the local parts store, locally made stuff (Bow,NH). $12 for a 50lb bag.

Soooo, how much to blast and powdercoat 4 steel wheels? I got a quote of $300 from one shop.  Shocked I understand the labor involved but damn......I'll probably just end up doing them myself...

Thanks Matt...for some reason I thought what was on the ground was much bigger granules (so to speak)
If THAT was fine, I have extra fine

As far as pricing goes...once my powdercoater does my 4 wheels, I'll ask him how much to do 4 wheels legit (no favors)

I'll get an idea after that.
It's not something I want to do to make a buck but maybe I could find a way to make it happen if the powdercoating price isnt bad.
So, I figure about late February, I should be done with Jims multiple sets of wheels...then we can talk... Razz

. . . . .
A couple of pennies here,,,

I've had excellent and fast results removing PC (powder coatings) by applying Permatex Gasket Remover, Oven Cleaner or paint stripper first.

Caution, many real good (read effective) aircraft strippers throw off fumes that can be highly toxic.

Note: There also are several companies that make "green" room-temperature PC stripper chemical/solutions.

If the wheels need further residue and/or oxidation removal after stripping, run them thru a shot peening machine, a glass beader cabinet or simply wire brush and scotchbrite them by hand.

The paddle wheel Shot Peen method is awesome, but you will have to pick the tiny "ball-bearings" out from the crevices where the center disc is welded into the rim.

I'm sure most folks posting here know that that there are significant differences between sand blast, media blast, soda, steel shot-peen, glass bead, black beauty, plastic balls, walnut shells, etc. , , ,

Each process has it's own particular range of what jobs they are best suited to.

Many people find that flame is an effective PC removal method for steel parts, today I was MIG welding inside a transit bus upon a powder coated chassis structure and all of it's coating boiled off in the heat affected zones.

The Zero Products Blast-N-Peen machine I use has a centrifugal separator in back that "floats" & then dumps the broken hollow glass beads into a large bottom zippered filter bag while saving the still intact spherical beads into a conical hopper for immediate re-cycled use.

. . . . .

I know this thread is about reconditioning steel wheels, but it should be mentioned here that care should be taken when handling aluminum wheels in the typical PC application process.

These temps are often 320-400+deg.f., and this could destroy the heat treat that gives the alloy wheel it's strength characteristics.

I would feel safer just spraying most light alloy wheels with two part epoxy paint for the re-coat, heck - even an aerosol rattle can can give excellent results.

February? I was thinking more like Tuesday. Smile Thanks for the effort but I think I'll give my cones to someone else.

Please let me know when you are ready to do aluminum wheels. I would like them polished. I don't care if you strip them or soda blast them.

On a serious all I think all my wheels have scratches from hub caps and some of them are quite bad on inside. Maybe someday I'll clean them up.
