Sleeving the Cats...Pros/Cons? Anyone..... Empty
PostSubject: Sleeving the Cats...Pros/Cons? Anyone.....   Sleeving the Cats...Pros/Cons? Anyone..... EmptyFri Oct 04, 2013 8:04 pm

Been reworking my exhaust a bit. Found a bottleneck after the muffler. So I am running 2 1/4 to a pair of Flowmasters. I have an H pipe installed, so after the mufflers it went down to 2 inch, doesnt sound right. So I picked up a pair of over axle Dyno Max pipes at 2 1/2 from Rock auto. Great deal, they were only $87 shipped, and I want to punch the cats out and sleeve them. Its a 94 so I am not worried about emissions.  Just wondering if I would have any problems with power loss due to not enough back pressure. I'm sure some of you crazy bastards have experimented with this before. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Cut right in the middle of the up stream weld. Remove all material. I think the cat pipes are 2.5 so take a piece of mild stainless. Make sure the opening in the cat shell is big enough for it to slide in. Mark the end to be cut on your piece, and pull it back out. Now measure that distance to the down stream side of the case, and drill four 3/8 size holes, equal distance apart. The holes should be in the weld. With the piece cut flush, stick it into the case, and weld the down stream holes shut with stainless welding wire, and smooth out with angle grinder. This should catch the down stream side of the pipe. Now reinstall both pieces of the cat back on the car. and tack both together in several places. Remove, finish weld with stainless wire, and reinstall for a final time, and check for leaks. Do make sure that what ever material you remove from the cat case to enlarge the hole to fit the pipe is added to the end of the pipe to make up the difference.

No negative back pressure problems then?

This should make it a straight shot. Just make sure the pipe size at the cat is 2.5. I am sure it it, but it might be 2.25.
