PostSubject: '94 Caprice 442 tribute   Fri Sep 20, 2013 4:03 pm

So I'm going to be making a 442 tribute car out of my Caprice. My mind is dead set. This is just a quick idea thing, gonna be a little while before I can execute. I am not going to modify the Fleetwood anymore than the lowering springs as it's been a dead reliable daily. The wagon, still on the back burner as a future paint/bodywork project. That's another thread.

71 tails are no where near close to 91-92 tails but have a similarity

442 tribute "4 door, 4 speed 2 (dual) exhaust"

Ideas:

-Olds CC grill
-Olds CC front bumper
-Suncoast hood to mimic the W30
-Red stripes on hood scoops
-Red stripe going around the lower bodyline of the car around the bumpers to mimic 442 stripes. Undecided if I will go around the top of the wheel wells
-Paint my hopsters to look like Olds SSII wheels
-Inner fenders painted red
-Engine painted gold with black accessory bracket and aluminum finish accessories.
-442 emblems on front fenders
-1994/95 Olds Eighty Eight steering wheel (classic rocket emblem). Possible late 80's Cutlass wheel.

I like my black streetlight bezels but I wish they were chrome now. Maybe I can get some chrome vinyl wrap?

Feel free to chime in with other ideas.

Here's how the car sits right now and below is a few pics from Midnight Club LA.

Wouldn't it be more cost effective to by an olds and do it up. At least it would be the same style car. Just curious

Thanks Glen and thanks for the bumper. I don't need luck just a little bit of money and time. I'm sure the cost of a Cutlass and required 442 parts would far outweigh this car I have now. That and it would be a 70's Cutlass. I want my Caprice and I like Oldsmobiles. They made an Oldsmobile wagon, I don't want an Oldsmobile wagon. So, I'm making an Oldsmobile sedan for myself.

I admire your gusto and wanting to make something that never existed. I don't have a lot of advice or anything (Seems you have it down pretty good), but I am excited to see how it turns out

Haters gonna hate. Tim, you're on to something that in its fruition, will be pretty damn awesome. I mean, that Hurst/ołds Impala I posted about months ago is the tops for creativeness. It's a one-of and yours will be as well. Hell, years ago you swapped in the LT1. First step in the right direction.

Keep on the right path, and you'll get exactly what you have pictured in your head. You ve got the grill, the bumper, the car, now it needs that special touch. It'll all make sense to the naysayers once its all painted up and ready to go.

Get a fiberglass rear bumper. Weld in tail light block out plates to eliminate the original lights and then move the tails down into the bumper, try to find a light that is similar to the 71, but also looks like it belongs on a 90's era car.
Sorta like these,

Cut them down a little vertically. French them in.... DONE!

I don't want to go that far with it as to modify the actual body of the car. Good idea though.

The logo is what is correct,.the car is a 90's car,.not a 70's car,.
so adding 70;s badges seems a bit odd,.sort of like adding the wrong era SS badge to an impala ss.
A suncoast hood really has the olds ram air look to it,.and would lend itself nicely to an olds paint scheme,.

IMO adding retro emblems is a good way to send a nod to the foundation and past designs of your car. My 96 has 66 cross flags on the fenders and a 66 "Chevrolet" on the grill tied together with a 66 "caprice by Chevrolet" script on the rear fascia where most would put "LT1" or that DE dealership tag.

It suits my purpose and I'm sure it will do more for Tim's caprice than the 90's era stuff. But I see the point and its 100% correct to look at it that way. It's not a 50s 60s or 70s muscle car, but in my defense at least, the 90s caprice emblems do nothing for the car or its image.

I am with Nick on this. And a big enough Late Olds emblem on the trunk will look right at home. It would look like the Olds version of the Impala emblem. The hood is a must.

Yeah, I think the thing that would be best would be creating what GM might have if they still made a Delta 88 or something in 1994. Although, didn't the Olds CC grilles have an older emblem in them? And didn't the newer swoopy emblem come out late, like on the Aurora and stuff?

Yes, but the Aurora came out in 95 so the emblem would be period correct. The 96 Malibu emblem is similar as well.

I'm all for the older emblem and either the script "Oldsmobile" or even a 442 badge off of a G body cutlass 442.

I actually think we should stop telling Tim how to build his car! silent  Sorry for feeding into the madness.

Haha, just trying to save him some work since I guess the Olds CC grille is molded with the old emblem style rectangle or whatever... his cah is a ninety-foah anyway!

F it all. Tim, you need to build this. Now!

I appreciate all the feedback keep it coming

nick, I am not using "retro" emblems. GM changed the Olds logo in 96. I Hate the 96+ logo and I will not use it. I will use a period correct logo from the early 90's. My Caprice is a '94 anyways.

As far as the grill, the 70's cars said 442 on the grill. In the 80's they started putting a rocket, so I'll probably use a rocket on the grill.. if I can find an OCC rocket to fit the spot perfectly. Maybe another rocket is the same size.

If I do put an oldsmobile script it will probably be an early 90's era also. 442 emblems not sure from what era I will use yet.

Hell I might even just have someone cut me some vinyl and use a similar font type as the Quad 442 of the early 90's.

It seemed to be all the rage in the 90's to use vinyl emblems.

Also, the first gen Aurora did not have an Oldsmobile logo on it. It also did not say Oldsmobile ANYWHERE on the outside of the car.  It had an Aurora logo, even on the steering wheel.
