PostSubject: Low oil light   Mon Jun 22, 2009 3:47 pm

My Low oil light comes on when i start the 95 impala, and stays on for a while. After driving it for about twenty minutes it turns off.
I checked the oil level and it's fine, i have no leaks. Should i install a new sensor? Has anyone experienced the same problem?

I would have your oil pressure checked out. It could be a faulty sensor. And it could be something a lot worse. I thought the one in my wagon needed replacing. Then I spun a bearing. I would have it checked out to comfirm.

Mine is the same way. It usually comes on when I first start the car and after sitting for a while. Once it's been running for a bit the light goes out on restarts. The sensor is like $35 and it's just a cheap plastic float. I'm planning on just plugging mine and splicing the wires together to kill the light. As long as you check the fluid on a regular basis and don't blow a cooler line completely open it shouldn't be an issue.

Oil level and pressure are seperate systems, duh, that's why they have different dummy lights Razz. It's like saying you should change your oil before the "change oil" light comes on Rolling Eyes. Nah I'm just messing with you Laughing. You deffinetely need to make sure there's no pressure issue related to you problem before you shrug it off.

Keep an eye on the pressure and level and if it all checks out then it's probably just the sensor being a pain in the arse. I swapped in the real pressure setup from a 9c1 not too long before my light issue started so I've been able to keep a constant monitoring on my situation, which is why I figure your in the same boat since it sounds like the exact same symptoms.

Ya, thats like our cars looking for just a yes or no before running the oil pressure gauge up to 1/2 mast, silly yes. I still havent seen anyone laugh at the aftermath of excessively low oil level or pressure. Not trying to scare you... just look back to Bill's post Shocked

My girlfriend ran her old Toyota completely out of oil twice. The first time was the most god awful noise I've ever heard from an engine. It sounded like the flywheel was spinning against the exhaust system. The amazing thing was the engine never blew up. It never passed an emission test again and it got junked a year later when it barely stayed running, but she filled the oil up and got a few more thousand miles out of it after the second no oil situation. I always say Toyota 4 bangers and Chevy V8's will run with even the worst maintanance better than Fords run straight from the factory.

Do the 9c1 pressure guage. It's pretty cheap and keeps the factory appearence. I can give you a hand with it if you need.

I can attest to the 4 banger, I've blown two Tercel's up. First one actually blew a hole in the bottom of the block, with the piston arm daingling and oil gushin'. And still ran!!...for a minute. Second didn't like to be shifted from 3rd to 4th at 95mph.

I'm at 189k with original everything pretty much. Pressure actually reads high on mine.
