A while back I was in the market for another c-10 truck for a daily driver/work truck. Brian had a friend up in Maine trying to sell a '79 GMC. logistics were a nightmare but I finally got my hands on it in January of this year.
I bought it without even going to look at it. It came on one of the freaking coldest days EVAR!!!
made some room in the garage and in she went. Now in the pics I was sent she look awesome..... In real life not so much. Kinda like a night of drinking and takin a broad home and waking up to the mess the next day (don't act like you don't know).

Pic I was sent:

Some jackass painted the truck with a brush and what I can only guess is rustoleum paint.
The wheel wells were caked in sludge and salt, bed was all banged up and rotted, sheet metal riveted, crappy rocker repairs, ugly ass interior someone spray painted red (must be color blind none of the reds matched) etc.

What's the first thing I do?? 4/6 drop!!!! At least I thought. But the front seemed to come down alot more than 4"
Rear axle flip (6") and drop spindles/lowering coils up front

I also shaved the tail lights and rear bumper and installed the 94-99 Cadillac Deville lights upside down

I was super excited to get her running once the warmer weather started happening, I was told it needed an oil pump so I dropped the pan and found the sump screen stuffed with old gasket. Hmm maybe that's why there's no oil pressure?? So I cleaned it all out and put it back together and I got great oil pressure. I installed headers and some exhaust cutouts and decided to take it for a rip. Down to the gas station about 2 miles down the road. Filled her up and put on a horror show pulling out of the parking lot. Halfway home theres blue smoke pouring off the back of the truck and up through the hole for the 4-speed. NOT good!!!
Truck dies as it rolls into the driveway. Mad
Decided to pull the engine and install a low mile lo3 I got from Anthony,
Changed alot of stuff around and just couldn't get the carb/timing/fuel pump to work together. Along with having issues with it dying as I down shifted to 3rd or 2nd.  So out that motor came.... I still haven't driven the truck more than 5 miles at this point, as its sitting in the garage all this time I get the bright idea to do some dashboard work.........
How about chopping it ALL out Smile

I kinda like it the way it is Smile
Pushed it back into the garage and it's been in there since.

google searches are my worst enemy, I looked at about 100+ pics of lowered trucks and started getting itchy.... The air ride system had been out of the caddy for a while and was just sitting there. I had everything but a 4-link to complete the job so why not right?? At this point a daily driver or work truck hasn't been a thought in my head for quite some time.
What better way to do a bag install than to pull the bed right off,

Seriously for a couple of pieces of steel? No way, went to a local metal place and bought a sheet of 3/16" traced out a cardboard notch and cut them with a plasma cutter, and a grinding wheel. Spent the next weekend welding/tack welding them into place. note in the pic I removed the leafs and built a temporary 2 link from some 2x2

More to come........

Negative, although I'm a huge fan of black paint I have something a little different planned for her. I kinda wanna drive it around a little bit all patchy but there's bare metal spots that I don't wanna get rusty and I don't wanna waste time with clear coat.

The caddy lights came out awesome but I have even better lights for the stepside.
Before scrapping the bed I pulled the caddy lights and buckets so if the step bed doesn't cut it I can always do another fleet bed.

There has already been talk about selling the truck once it's finished, and I've also contemplated scrapping the 79 cab and front clip to swap on a 47-53 cab/clip but I'm really anxious to get back to the 55 caddy. So I'll probably just stay the course.
4-link should be here soon and I'm almost done with the engine. Everytime I try to work on this thing something else comes up. Yard work, daily driver repairs, family issues/events, etc.....
I'm 2 cuts away from laying on the frame and 4 cuts away from the bumper touching the ground.

I'd love to run this super t-10 4 speed but I'm having issues figuring out a reluctor for the VSS of the lt1 PCM.
I also might have to tunnel the cab since I'm gonna have to raise the trans x-member up 2".

I do drive mine year round, and race AWD ricers in the snow Twisted Evil

4-link came 2 days ago, hoping to at least get it tacked in this weekend. Finished the rear main seal and oil pan gaskets today on the lt1. Still need to send out the PCM and thin the wire harness down some more.
I'm hoping for a key turning by the end of September.
I got distracted with a driveway project and fixing stuff on the stupid cavalier.
I'm back on track now.
Engine pics coming soon.

Little info on the motor....

Pulled the engine from the 96 caddy and it was COVERED in oil, no idea what the heck happened or when. Spend a day stripping all the crap off it and getting as much of the oil off as possible.

Didnt want to put a plain Jane lt1 into the truck, it's already gonna turn heads just having the swap done, but I wanted to "one up" it.
After researching and looking at a ton of photos I found out that truck engines in the 50's were painted different colors to let the mechanics determine what engine they were working on. 327's came in grey and I believe black. Too boring/close to lt1 stock,
Some of the 283's came in a green though, I tracked down 3 cans of this discontinued color and went to town.

I went with tall retro looking finned valve covers.

Next is getting the t-10 back into the bell housing...... PITA without a lift!!!!!!!!!
Not looking forward to it.

Once I can determine the angle of the trans I'll be able to set the pinion angle and weld in the 4-link.
Just got a wagon gas tank from Dave to install under the bed also.
Waiting on a tune and possible differential mounted VSS.

It's GM alpine green. Funny you say that because I believe alpine green turned into Detroit diesel green.
The actual color of the original engines is not in production ANYWHERE. this is the best replication I could find.

GM corporate blue is the color the late 70's blocks had.
I've painted blocks with that before. It's an ok color. But I always get "why'd ya paint it ford blue??"

The alpine green was used on various 235's 261's 283's and 327's.
There's a shit load of colors used on early GM engines. ALL passenger cars however had strictly chevy orange paint.
Link to color codes: http://1954advance-design.com/Web%20images/PPIP/PPIP-1912-1966-EngineColors.html

This color I used is pretty close to the original but I think it's a little off.
Same thing with early caddy blue. They make reproduction paint but its off, it's not an exact match.

Update: trans went in this morning with minimal struggle.... i.e. Only a few shit's, a handful of damn it's, and possibly only a single F word. Smile
The trans cross member fought me all the way though (no idea why) and I had to replace the trans mount. I put some 3/8 bolts it in and tightened it down but I never got any resistance. Like it feels like the bolts are turning forever???? I'll revisit that when I get back under there to attach the shift linkage. Gotta get an angle gauge and I'll be ready to set the rearend up.

Awesome work, dude! I really liked it with the fleetside bed, but the steppy is pretty bitchin', too. I'd never seen the deville tails upside down. Pretty neat!

And that motor is bitchin'! Very Happy
(I gotta figure out what color I'm going to do the 9C1's engine. Marshmallow, too Wink)

Can't wait to see it all together!

I like your style afro

Thanks guys. Keepin busy with it! I was planning on a two tone paint job. But I'm really leaning towards leaving it ratty or painting it high gloss black with rims satin black under those moons. I'd love a set of torque thrusts under it but $$$ prevents it for now.
