I know the 4l60e swaps between years with some mods, but to remove the e all together what are the options? The 4l60 and 700r4 should be the same case which would mean that they should swap, but I'm not sure on that. Does anyone know if the pre-computer controlled 700's will drop into a Caprice with a gen2 engine? I'd love to drop in a built 700 and have it bolt right up but I'm worried the bellhousing will be different or the input shaft won't line up or something.

And a th350/400 conversion is out since I drive on the highway alot and want to keep overdrive.

Your wasting your time with this mod. The 700r4, 4l60, and 4l60e are basicly the same. They all share the same failure traits

I'm eliminating computer controls from my car one system at a time. I hate sensors and want to gradually reduce the total number down to what a Caprice would have had in around 1966. Of course I'll still run electric guages because I hate the old mechanical ones which put hot toxic fluids in the passenger compartment.

I had originally planned to go with a Vortec 6.0 with a 4l80e, but it might end up running too many dollars for the whole swap. Now I'm leaning towards a gen1 with a th400. I have to do it in sections though as dollars are few and far between. I figure a 700r4 will replace my failing trans and let me start removing electrical stuff so that when I go for the th400 it'll be a little smoother swap.

Before people want too much info this project isn't planned to happen for another year or until my current trans goes boom on the side of 495.
