PostSubject: Steering damper (mod)   Thu Jun 13, 2013 8:31 pm

Since reading into the pages of the link that Jay posted, about the Impala SS/ Chevy HurSSt Oldsmobile car I asked about, I liked the sound of this...

The steering damper that came on the Fleetwood and Roadmaster sounds like a good mod idea. For my driving habits and terrible road conditions, I'd like to consider "modding" one into the 9C1.

Has anyone here modded one into a non optioned B body? Know someone who has? Has the parts?

I did read a bit on the big board, via google search. I came up with part numbers and prices from 3 years ago. Not much about what I'm asking here.

As for members that have them stock, could someone set aside some time to take pictures and measurements of the frame mounted bracket AND its location?

TIA for any help you may be able to provide!

I have always recommended that mod to anyone running Impala ss wheels. It keeps the front wheels from tracking, and thee steering feels more controllable. Of course, I probably got it from that article.Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the added recommendation! It seems like a logical step with wider wheels/tires. I have already rebuilt the steering to include an alignment, but NEVER thought about this until tonight. Even after seeing so many in junk yards. Tracking and bump steer isn't BAD but its not GOOD either.

All you need is a center link, bracket and damper. Keep in mind the Fleetwood and roadmaster had the damper mounted on opposite sides of the frame. Fleetwood mounts on the drivers side and Roadmaster on the passenger side.

The Roadmaster one is discontinued (or was when I rebuilt my front end last year) but the Fleetwood one is available and supposedly for the Roadmaster too.

I am not sure, but I think maybe the frame bracket is on all frames. Don't quote me. I do remember one of my caprice, or impala having it. I think. But I could be wrong. Maybe.
