| I'm digging this up because I have the same question.
How do you get aluminum rims to shine like new? I've heard to use a brillo pad and soapy water. I've also heard to use super fine grit (2000) sandpaper. Any advice before I screw these up more than they are already? | |

| strip the clear with thinner or paint stripper then buff with a compound https://2img.net/h/i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/meanss/Impala/wheels001.jpg | |

| I can skip the "strip the clear coat" step I think in my case I still need to do some sanding or something before the buffing step. These rims are a bit used | |

| if they were polished rims then you could use a fine steel wool but they have a machined finish | |

| Mine are the old Camaro rims. I'm not sure if they're machined or polished or what. I don't recall what they looked like back in 1985 | |

| The best way I have found is to buy "Aircraft Stripper", and cover the rim with it. Let it sit for about 15 minutes. Get some womens cleaning gloves which are the rubber gloves that come up the fore arm, and some heavy scouring pads. After the stripper has set for the 15 minutes put another wet layer on and start scrubbing the entire rim, then rinse. Then use a nutrilizer to nutrilize the acid of the stripper, and wash with Dawn dish washing liquid, and rinse. At this point the clear coat should be gone, and the rim clean. Start with 600 grit wet/dry paper, and wet sand the area you want polished, followed by 1000, and finish with 2000. At this point you will have a slight shine to it, and now the fun starts. Get some regular 3m light rubbing compound, and polish your ass off till it is where you want it, and finish with some chrome polish. Good luck |
