Was that the night you came up, and the earthquake happened? That might explain the seismic activity.

So I realized that I haven't posted an update on the illwood for a while. It's at my mother's house occupying the space where the marshmallow was stored over the winter... Wink

My buddy swapped the tranny out for me last Thursday and I went to pick it up Friday to bring it to my mother's. Well, it had a blown rear brake line, so I crimped it with a pair of dikes, threw on a pair of vice grips for good measure, tie wrapped it to the other lines to keep it tucked in the frame rail, and headed the 15 miles home. Wink

Oh, what a view!
How I missed having the gunsights up front! I love the hood ornament... Lol

Anyways, it ran and drove great. Just floated down the road. Everything seemed to work. Well, everything except the brakes. And the power steering. And the AC. And the power anthenna. But aside from that stuff, everything else worked! Very Happy

I got it to my mother's and parked it. Man, it's a bitch to turn that thing around with no power steering! Reservoir was full, no foamy fluid, and no noises, so I figured it needed a pump. So I set out to swap in a good used one. That high pressure line on these cars absolutely sucks big hairy moose balls! I finally got it loose, and for the fitting to turn independently of the line, got the pump out, and installed the new(ish) one in. Then I tried to reattach the line. Now, that line sucks when the fitting will spin with your fingers, but it sucks even worse when it won't! I screwed with it for about 3 hours. Pump loose. Pump tight. Left handed. Right handed. In front of the car. Beside the car. In the engine bay... I just couldn't get the friggin' line to start threading back into the pump! AAAAARRRGGGGHHHH :* It was 20* out and getting dark. I was freezing. Angry. Frustrated. Bleeding... I gave up.

So that's how it sits. But now it's under a foot and a half of snow... I'll have at it again once the snow melts. Then I'll do the brake lines. Eventually... I just want to drive the damn thing!

I love this car. Rolling Eyes

If there was nothing wrong with the PS fluid could it possibly be anything to do with the variable assist steering box?
That pump you got from me is a 96 from that 53k mile car. So if it doesn't work after that you can rule out PS pump.
I have issues in mine on and off with PS. I lose it at the weirdest times.

If the variable assist fails, it defaults to full assist.

And uh, no. Not for sale! Yet. Wink

So I had time to make it back to my mother's today to jack the car up and bleed the new pump. I has power steering! YAY!

Now time for brake lines.

Then, maybe, I can start driving it. Smile

This look familiar to anybody???

Woot! Very Happy I picked it up from my buddy's shop late tonight (after going back home to get my jumper cables, grrrr) after we put Bella to bed and then took it through a car wash (touchless, like it matters on this car pig ) and put about 30 miles on it just driving it around. The power assist kept going to full assist occasionally and was freaking me out, but with the more miles that I put on, the more it settled down. After about 20 miles, it was working as it should. Wink But it goes pretty straight, stops straight, and floats like it's on a cloud. I really enjoyed driving it! Smile

I noticed the passenger side of the windshield leak down the A pillar and that the passenger window doesn't want to move and the rear driver's side window needs rollers. Oops! Needs some exhaust work, too, because one of the mufflers is blown out, but I have something in mind to fix that. Wink

Gonna take her to work tomorrow! Very Happy

I've put a couple hundred miles on it over the past couple days... And for a total turd, this thing is pretty damn decent! I love the long hood and hood ornament... Man, did I miss that!

Violation to commence shortly! I hope to have it "done" in a month or so. Wink

So the mods have begun. Sorta... Wink

I replaced the leaky coolant tank cap and fixed my mystery coolant leak. Smile

Also painted the wheels yesterday. Screw proper prep and waiting for warmer weather! Wink

Also scored a set of BFG 225/75/15 whitewalls for 75 bucks offa Craigslist this morning! Had to drive up to Berwick, Maine to get em. So I had a pleasant ride up in the illwood, with the radio cranking out some Blake Shelton the whole ride. CD player works! Very Happy

Hopefully I can at least get the rims and tires on this week. Maybe paint it next week or weekend some time. We'll see. I need to get the tint on the windows and dye the roof, too...

Would a red top be too much with the satin black? I'm thinking it might be. But I think I'm going to go either red scallops or red pinstripe flames, so... I'm not sure?

Diggit! Very Happy

Damn, those wheels look good!
I think the whole top being red might be too much...lol. I would do the red pinstripe flames, I think the red scallops could also be too much:

Although I like them...are you doing just like pinstriped scallops? Or something like this?

I think the car with the wheels red and the body mostly black with something slight would look awesome...if the wheels were chrome though, a more prominent secondary color would look better?

Or you could always go the Oakleys, Zubaz pants, high top Pump sneakers, snapback hat with the bill flipped up, BUM Equipment route:

Very Happy

So... Even though we had snow and sleet here today, tomorrow is supposed to be in the 50's, so she's getting painted out in the backyard if it's that warm and not raining! Hope it dries before the wind blows leaves and pine needles and dirt onto it! Wink

The rims are painted, the whitewalls are mounted, and the spiders have come in. So by the end of the day tomorrow, I hope to have the roof dyed, the whitewalls cleaned and rims bolted up to the car.

Then once the roof is dry, I'll start masking and see if I can't get it the right color by the end of the weekend! Wink

So it warmed up enough today about 11am to go out and start this whole painting project.

First I had to start by fixing the major water leak I had at the top of the passenger side windshield. I narrowed it down to water getting in at the seam.

I cleaned it as best I could and layered on the Automotive Goop and crossed my fingers. Wink

Then, the masking began...

Once I had it all masked, I used a green Scotchbrite and scrubbed the heck out of it. Then I used the SEM vinyl/plastic prep and a bunch of rags and cleaned it up as best I could. I used SEM Satin Black dye. Of course. Wink

I did my best not to tiger stripe it, but I only had two cans because that's all the parts store had, so I had to stretch them.

It came out pretty good. A little bit a tiger striping, and a little heavier at the overlaps, but still good enough for who it's for...

Then I got the whitewalls cleaned up as best I could for now, and have them ready to mount up after paint tomorrow.

Then I spent a couple hours sanding and disassembling and then washed it with dawn to prep for the real paint.

I was going to go to Chris's shop about an hour away to paint it tomorrow because I didn't know where my compressor or gun where in storage. Well, I spent an hour at the storage unit and lookie what I found!

So it looks like I get to spray it in my yard tomorrow! Woot! Very Happy

I've got a few hours of masking ahead of me tomorrow, then a final wipe down and spray. We'll see what happens! Hope I don't get too much crap in the paint!

I lol'd! Still giggling. Smile

And thanks guys! I hope it'll hold up ok. But SEM is good stuff, so I'm pretty sure that it will.

I'm pretty excited to get it painted tomorrow and get the wheels on it! It's going to kill me driving it around like that without it being lowered though! ARGH! Razz

And day two begins....

Figures. It was beautiful, sunny and calm when I walked out here an hour ago and moved the car. 45*. Now it's cloudy, noticeably cooler and windy as hell... Awesome.

Wish me luck!

Of course it's been windy and sprinkling on and off today.... Grrrr. But it's all masked and wiped down and ready to go. Waiting for the wind to die down and those threatening clouds to either do something or blow away...

Well, it's painted! Smile

It wasn't without it's challenges today though. Between the wind, pine needles, rain, clouds, and teasing amount of blue sky and warm sunshine, I managed to conquer the beast! lol. Man, I gotta say, it is A LOT of work masking one of these off by yourself! I had 3 rolls of tape, and I ended up running out and had to buy two more!

Anyways, pics or it didn't happen, I know...

Here it is all masked.

So when I finished masking, after about FIVE HOURS, the clouds were really threatening rain. So I waited it out a bit. It got really windy and cooled off. But after about a half an hour, it never rained. And most of the day I could see blue skies all around me and it was really pissing me off! Ha! So I said "screw it" and decided to start shooting. And damned if it didn't get windy again and start friggin sprinkling half way through shooting it. Dammit! So I ended up with a bunch of little gold spots wherever the rain drops hit. But luckily, it only lasted a few minutes. I just kept going. And after it started to dry, I went around it again and fogged it in the thin spots and tried to cover the gold pimples... And the whole time, bugs were landing on it and little pine needles were landing on it. Grrrrr... As of right now, it's STILL tacky, so I can't really pick them off yet. Hopefully after baking in the sun tomorrow, it'll cure and I can get that crap off of there.

So here are the painted pics. It's still very wet in those pics.

At this point I had to run out and find a tire shop that was open at 4pm on Sunday. I had one tire that had a good leak in it, so I took it to get it broken down and have some bead sealer liberally applied. Found a place, and 20 bucks (!) later, I had 4 tires holding air.

When I got home, it was drying, but still very tacky. But it had been sitting an hour and a half at this point, so I decided to de-mask and reassemble it. That blue tape DID NOT want to come off in the cold! So friggin aggravating! And the orange tape kept leaving residue spots. Maybe warmer weather than 50* would have helped.

Ready to remove the mask! Bella even helped. lol. I was really worried that the vinyl top hadn't had enough time to cure, and when I peeled the tape off that all the dye was going to come with it. But I lucked out! The dye stayed in place! No damage! Woot!

And reassembled...

At this point, my wife was running thin on patience, and they were eating dinner already, so I went in and joined them and hung out for a while. Sure felt good to sit! My back was killing me!!!

And here it is. With the new (old) wheels and spider caps. I totally diggit!

Side note, the first tank of gas netted me 19 MPG mixed! Not bad!

I also replaced that banged up rear stainless trim on the driver's side with the spare I got from Indy. I still need to swap out the bumper.

As of 10pm tonight, the paint was still very soft. Hopefully it'll be sunny tomorrow and it'll fully cure in the sun.

I'm pretty satisfied for the 50 bucks I have into it. I used one quart of Rustoleum Semi-gloss black (like I have used many times in the past) and thinned it with mineral spirits til it looked thin enough to spray and then shot it with my 10 dollah Harbor Freight HVLP gun. As far as prep work, I masked it all off, scuffed the whole thing with a green Scotchbrite pad, and wiped it all down with mineral spirits. I had sanded all the real rough spots yesterday before I washed it.

So there it is. Another 50 dollah Crovo special. It came out pretty good considering the horrible conditions I sprayed it in. I can't wait to get some pinstripe flames on it! And my 20% ebay tint kit. And my lowering springs... It's almost there. I have an appointment Wednesday at the exhaust shop to get rid of those blown out mufflers and to get some Cherry Bombs on it.

Phew. I'm beat. Going to BED! Very Happy

I have those nice Moog front springs and a set of Eibach rears for it to go in on the mod day though! So, two more weeks of the nosebleed seats! Very Happy

It's gonna look awesome lowered, but it looks great at the height it is right now too, "don't take any guff from these swine" Bill! Laughing

It is absolutely unreal what a difference that made. I kind of like the contrast of the tan guts to the black exterior for some reason. And I like how all the chrome trim looks set off from the satin finish. A job well done sir!

Now replace that friggin' bumper, but don't forget to take a video of putting your foot through it in numerous places first.
