I've never even pondered this, I've heard you used to be able to get retreaded tires but they were cheap crap, and most relegated to tractor trailers now.
Sometimes people get a different tread applied to the BFG carcass (or other sidewall brand) like that of a Goodyear MT, which looks funny but not too noticeable. Personally I'd always want the BFG carcass because those All Terrains have damn near bulletproof sidewalls.
I just may never buy new BFGs again!

Keep in mind, a 285 BFG for an 18" wheel is something ridiculous like 300 bucks each brand new right now.
