305 Oil Leak Empty
PostSubject: 305 Oil Leak    305 Oil Leak EmptyFri Jan 04, 2013 4:29 pm

My bros '93 is leaking oil pretty bad. Looked under it today and the entire bellhouse is soaked. It's definitely oil and not ATF. It looks like the leak is from the top of the motor and goes down. However, the whole oil pan gasket is soaked from front to back. So my first thought was rear main. But would that explain the wet oil pan gasket?

Here are a couple of crappy pics

1. Intake manifold gasket
2. Loose oil filter
3. Oil pressure gauge near distributor
4. Distributor seal
5. Valve cover gaskets
6. Timing chain cover
7. Rear main seal

If you take the inspection plate off, undo the torque converter bolts and slide the TC back then start the car you will see if it's the main seal. More than likely it's a rear intake seal.

Can scratch 2 and 6. Filter is on right, timing cover isn't wet.

Won't sliding the TC back dump ATF out? I'd rather not do that while laying under the car...

When you say rear intake seal. Do you mean part of the rear main or the back of one of the intake manifold gaskets?

I think he means at the back of the intake manifold. I believe there is a gasket there that keeps the lifter valley under the intake sealed. I'd look at the sender for the oil pressure gauge or oil pressure switch...like Indy said they're basically under the distributor...

Is it leaking real bad as in just getting all over the engine, or is it actually dripping on the ground, or even puddling?

Sliding the TC back will make the TC to trans space tighter, not give it room to leak ATF.

Intake manifold gasket set is comprised of 4 different pieces, 2 hard gaskets that go along the heads, and 2 rubber gaskets one for the front one for the back. The rubber seals are garbage and should be thrown away when doing a new intake gasket. Use straight RTV on the front and rear edge and you'll have a better seal for longer.

I'm Doing a timing chain, oil pan, water pump and possibly an intake gasket on my truck very soon if you care to come down and watch the procedure If you determine that's the issue.

Every TBI caprice I ever bought had an intake leak (except this one) so ummmm actually yeah EVERY TBI I ever owned had crappy intake gasket.

Check the sender first. It's quick, cheap, and easy. I had the same symptoms on mine a while back.

Yeah, I'd love to. Plus... I need to go to Tuckers. Arrow Laughing

I had to do those intake gaskets on the wagon when I got it. I'd MUCH rather do those than a rear main or something like that. What would I do to check if its the intake gaskets? Did you already type it and I missed it? Embarassed

The switch/sender is fine. You mean the one on the side of the block that works the gauge/idiot light correct?

There should be 2 of those Justin, one runs the oil gauge, and that is on the side of the block, the other tells the injectors to fire basically (no oil pressure, no fuel delivery). That's a safety/EFI related one, up under the base of the distributor kind of. I know the TBI Caprices have the different intakes than the other TBIs because of the cowl overhang issue (for distributor removal) but I believe it's the same overall design?

I vote intake manifold. My 91 OCC would rain oil from there until I fixed it.

Rear intake gasket. Give the car a reach around. Razz
Reach around behind the intake where it mates to the block and see if it is soaked

Intake manifold!

Stuck my hand behind the motor right between the manifold and the head. Came out with nice fresh oil on it. Just ordered the gaskets. Glad its an easy fix. Arrow

Who told you it's an easy fix?

Maybe it's an easy fix on an LT1. I happen to know from experience that it's NOT an easy fix on a TBI, especially the first time.

Be prepared for 2-4 hours of gasket scraping, followed by the need to set the intake down perfectly the first time or risk doing it over and over until it's perfect. Ask me how I know....

How long ago did you do a TBI?? Lol,
It's an easy fix,
Rag placed in the valley and some paper towels stuffed into the water jackets, straight razor scrape the gasket.
The felpro gasket set has little plastic studs that click into the heads to hold the gasket in place, I spray each side with copper gasket
Run a bead of RTV front and back. Remove rag and paper towels, Plop the intake on and torque the bolts back down, hardest part of the whole thing is getting the distributor to engage the oil pump.

I've done a few Razz

lol! I did it a few years ago. Obviously different cars will require different amount of time removing the old gasket; mine was a travesty.

Also, the part about plopping the intake down is far easier said than done in my experience. Mess up that bead of RTV and you're gonna leak either coolant or oil.

Getting the Dizzy back in wasn't a big problem, but it is important to get some RTV on that dizzy as well or it will piss oil. Spin it backwards about half a gear so when it drops in it rotates right into position.

Old gaskets came off in 5 big pieces, it was great.
