88 Chevy C1500 Empty
PostSubject: 88 Chevy C1500   88 Chevy C1500 EmptyMon Jan 07, 2013 9:24 pm

This is an absolute shot in the dark, but figured I'd throw it out there-

My dad has an old black/silver '88 Chevy Silverado that he's had for ages. He stopped using it last year when it wouldn't start, and I can't get it started, it's been parked in the driveway. The truck isn't pretty. It was always dead reliable though and my dad drove it all over the damned place. He insists it was the best vehicle he's ever owned.

The truck has high miles, over 320K. Interestingly enough, it was sold from Lannan Chevrolet's Ipswich dealership in the mid 1990s with incredibly low miles on it, I want to say under 10K, but can't remember. Someone bought it from there and used it as a business vehicle for an antique shop in Rockport for a while after, then my dad bought it.

Anyway, it's a longbed regular cab C1500, 350, automatic. Has a Lou's dual exhaust setup on it of some sort that I think is in good shape but I don't know.
I'm pretty sure it has a posi rear and it's all tow package stuff. I'll have to see what the rear gears are.
It has a matching Leer "old man" cap on the back, and extruded aluminum running boards to set the oh-so-80s scene. Had all the power options, but the driver's power window needs a motor, and the pass. side outside door handle is broken. It has other nickel and dime issues to be expected.

The only reason I'm posting it is because the body is pretty straight, and actually solid considering. There is typical rot in the bottom cab corners (but the rest of the cab seems solid) the back bumper is a piece of crap, and there is a rot spot above where the factory tailpipes came out on the pass side after the rear wheel, way down the bottom. It has some surface rust starting around the wheel lips on the front fenders and a few things like that, paint peeling, etc. The most interesting thing is the underside of this truck is still pretty damned nice looking. It actually puts the DGGM SS to shame for sure, no joke. A lot of factory black still under there.

The tires are mismatched and crappy, but hold air. My dad had gotten new Cooper Discoverer ATRs for it and they were terrible, all four had belts separate and he'd gotten some temporary new ones and a couple junkyard ones, lol.

The truck had all new brakes put in at least the front, maybe the back too, not long before it wouldn't start. It had a bunch of other new parts too, I think the water pump, alternator maybe? I'd have to look.

As far as the 350, I don't know what the deal is, but I'm sure it's original, and it did the valve seal SBC oil burning puff...probably while it was running and driving too. And it's a flat-tappet TBI truck motor. When I was fiddling with it trying to get it to run, I noticed that someone had RTV'd the ignition module onto the wires for it at some point in the past. The truck hiccups and seems like it wants to run, but just cranks over.

Last year after seeing Crovo's S10 I was considering taking the truck off my dad's hands, painting it satin black and patching the cab corners, taking the cap off, and throwing my chrome rally wheels/tires onto it, then maybe trying to drop a cheap 305/350 TBI in it, and using it for work. I think it would be a cool truck to fix up a little and airbag or something like that. While this truck does possess sentimental value, that just isn't going to happen right now.

My father knows it needs to go but doesn't like the idea of sending it to the junkyard if someone could use it for parts or fool around with it and make it a driver. So if anyone's interested, let me know...I'm sure he'd let it go for around what a scrapper would pay for a full sized truck.

I can't find pictures, but it's similar to this one, but with a cap on it, and no, not as nice, lol. Can get some if desired.

I'm actually not sub'd to him. GLWS Matt, if parking wasn't a premium I'd pick that thing up.
