Input needed on buying brand new car Empty
PostSubject: Input needed on buying brand new car   Input needed on buying brand new car EmptyMon Nov 05, 2012 7:00 pm

What's up guys. My girlfriend is looking at purchasing a new car. Currently she drives a 2008 Ford Focus, and right now the trade in value is more than she owes so were looking to unload this thing. We checked out, and liked, a 2013 Toyota Corolla S today. Sticker on it is $19,900.00. Now, we didn't talk numbers with anybody as I made it clear that we were not rushing things and just wanted to see if she would like the car. I asked the salesman what people are realistically paying for similar new corolla S, and all he said was "nobody pays sticker price" and left it at that.

So, to those who have purchased brand new vehicles before, how much can I expect them to come down fr the 19,900 sticker price?

Please, no bs about buying a Corolla. It's for my girlfriend, and in the long run it will be leaps and bounds better than the current Focus. I've just never purchased a new car, and I want to be prepared for when they start playing the games. Any input is appreciated! Thanks guys -Paul

I've never purchased new. But I went with my buddy to Quirk when he bought his new Forester he talked them down from a 24,500 sticker to 21,000 and got them for a 4,000 trade. Dealers out there are a lot more flexible on price than the ones out here I saw. But since it is a Corolla and they kinda sell themselves I have no idea how much they'll budge but 20k for a Corolla seems nuts.

Ya the price went up on the 13 model, but she loves it and Toyotas good rep kind is what gets me. I know the focus is basically a 100k mile car so while trade in is more than what she owes, now is the time.

go to toyota.com and see what they post for rebates in your area. Shop southern NH too, its an hour drive and you could save you big $$$$, but you still transfer Ma sales tax. If your getting X amount over for your trade take that off the price after any rebates, and just watch what they try to sell you in the finance department that you dont need or want, that will alter your monthly payment. A lot of dealerships get paid big off selling you these extra warranty's.

Remember they work for you, you don't buy , they don't eat. Arrow

stand your ground and let them know you already got it some where else and if they're not ready to make a deal your leaving.

Good call on checking out the '12s too.

Get financing yourself from a bank or credit union, go in with it, you will likely get better financing on your own than through the dealer, as they make money on that.

My father has been a huge Toyota fan for years and they have treated him very well through 3 Avalons (though he did just sell it for a Chevy Volt). A good friend of mine has a 2010 Corolla she loves, they are great "girl" cars.

On 20K I'd be looking for 3K off.
Whether it works on your trade or however they try to present it.
When your about to settle dont forget dealer holdback is and additional 3% if the car is new to the dealership (hasnt sat for months on the lot) Thats $600 free $ to the dealership. It would look a whole lot better in her pocket.
I always like to pull out my checkbook just before I throw the final #....they HATE when you put it back in your pocket... Smile
Have fun...nothing like the headache you get from a dealership.

Don't mention the trade until you get a decent number negotiated for the car. Then, say ok, now how much will you take off for my trade-in?

I have purchase five new cars in my life, and my advice is shop around. Don't just look at Toyota. Look at other brands. Mazda 3, Chevy Cruise, new ford Focus.
As far as getting the price down. Companies really don't do that anymore. You might get rebates, end of year clearance offers or cash back, and getting the most for your trade when you are upside down can go along way. You might find Ford to have loyalty cash on a new focus to help absorb the negative equity.

But like I said. Shop around, and drive cars, ask questions. I always look at three factors. Warranty, fuel mileage, and features for a given price.
Compare for yourself

I like the Cruise Eco for warranty and fuel mileage. And the fact it is the number one selling small car in the US, Beating out Corolla does not hurt either.

Steve's advice with the check book works. I have used it in the past. Most recently with my red Silverado. Book came out and went back in my pocket twice. I even got up at one point, and made sure the sales manager saw me walking toward the door.

Thanksfor the advice guys! She is pretty well set on a corolla, an I back her decision 100%. Honestly, Ive driven a lot of the newer vehicles and I can say that I would not feel comfortable with her buying anything else, aside from a civic, that has hopes of lasting 10+ years. Not that she would keep it that long, but we will eventually end up wanting a house so it's a possibility. I wouldn't buy anything with a CVT transmission. The new Focus has a manu/matic trans that feels weird, and I don't trust any ford product anymore since most of it is euro trash.

She owes 4,500 on the focus, and we can probably get 6k for it in trade(trade in value in good condition is 6,900 but I'd imagine they wouldnt pay that) do were basically working with a 1,500 down payment.

My experience is, keep talking them down. Tell them you have a price in mind and be prepared to walk out. They will chase you down. They really want to sell the car. My wife and I have had great luck. I would say you should be able to talk them down at least 3000 bucks on a new car. Good luck.

In that case, take advantage of 0% APR financing for 36/48 months, or 0.9% APR financing for 60 months and enjoy. But like I said, things have changed with the auto industry, so you might get a little off but not likely.

.... I spent years at the big guy dealerships, and I am friends with a number of finance managers who all told me this is the best way to go with financing a car

I've found when the dealers have this^^^^ in their pocket theyre NOT as negotiable as when they can only offer the "going rate"

If she IS going to finance it through the dealership make sure you negotiate with the finance manager too.....BEFORE you sign or write a check.

Well that is what I am saying. The only negotiating you can do is getting more for your trade, and get low finance rate. The old days you could haggle price, but those days are gone. It does not hurt to shop different Toyota dealers and work your angle that way.

BTW 0% APR financing for 36/48 months, or 0.9% APR financing for 60 months is the current rates available on 2013 Corolla.
