PostSubject: The "Beatah with a Heatah..." build (or rebuild) thread...    Wed Oct 10, 2012 8:35 am

Hey Guys,

So as you may well know, I went and scooped myself a little beater to get better gas mileage on my longer commute. I ended up with a well worn, but mostly rust free 98 Monte Carlo with the little 3.1 in it. It runs and drives well but the interior is beeeeeaaaat. But for 500 bucks,I think I did awright.

Pic of the night I picked it up:

The interior was trashed and the Alpine was only bumpin two speakerz so I went to Hollands yesterday and picked up some of the stuff I needed. I rewired the stereo and swapped a bunch of interior trim and got it serviceable. While I was doing that, I notice that the pinstripe was missing on the driver's door. Curious. So I decided to fix that, too, with what I had on hand.

Before:

During:

After:

Ha! Diggit! Lol

It has 4 bald tires, but I had a set of 02 wimpala wheels with good snows that I was going to bolt on. So yesterday, I attempted it. No go. Arrrgghhh! It hit the brake caliper mount in front and the tires rub the lca's in the rear. Boo. And in doing that, I found two broken studs on the right front. So, off to Al's shop last night to use his tools and expertise because both of mine were locked in storage. Wink I ended up having to pull the frint hub/wheel bearing assembly off to get the new studs in. Thanks for the toolz and know-how, dude!

Anyways, now I just need to get the tires switched over to the stock wheels, find some seats, get an oil change and alignment, and replace the rear upper strut mounts and it should be a good driver. I see a set of intake gaskets and plugs in my future, too...

And maybe some satin black with silver rockers and a red stripe... Razz

Not that anybody cares, I'm not sure I even do myself, but I got that horrifically disgusting interior dooshed out. I pulled all the seats, vaccuumed, febreezed, vaccuumed again, febreezed again... The carpet is trashed, all that's left in the back seat area is the rubber backing. Question It looks like it has the mange. lol. So I got a long floor mat to cover most of the ugly there. Then I cleaned all the plastics, washed the windows in and out, and then thoroughly cleaned the new leather seats I picked up at Hollands the other day and installed them. I wasn't planning on leather, but they were the most comfortable ones I sat in that day AND they were even the right color! I ended up having to run some wiring for the driver's seat because the power rail didn't unbolt from the seat, like a Limited or a Brougham seat is, which prevented me from being able to use my original manual rails, so I had to run power and ground... Which is no small feat when ALL my tools and the stuff I had to do it was in STORAGE!!! ARGH!

Oh yeah, AND I added the requisit BADASS stickers, too! Very Happy

So anyways, it looks good(ish) and smells good in there, so I'm happy.

I just finished a little bit ago (worked 10 hours today and then hung with the family so I didn't actually get out there til like almost 10pm!), so no pics. I can get some tomorrow, if anyone really wants them. Wink

(Holy run on sentences, Batman!)

Yup. Worn out, torn, nasty, falling-apart cloth replaced with nice, comfy, clean leathers... Wink

I know, I know... Not very original. Razz

I woulda liked Bonnies, but they don't fold forward to allow for rear seat access in the coupe. And there were no nice Grand Prix coupes to grab seats from either.

@ Chris - Ha! I talked to the guy who bought it a couple months ago. He still hadn't done the head gaskets and it was being driven every day. He just kept the trips short, like before it comes up to temp short, so it wouldn't overheat! LOL!

Thanks. And yeah, it's more comfortable to sit in. But it's still in a super crappy car. Wink

LOL! I really hate the shifter in those cars it's just too long and awkward. Other than that the interior looks nice! Good score on the seats!

Yeah, the shifter is totally a holdover from the 80's... And if I cared aboot the car (it WAS built in Canada, eh Wink), then I'd swap in an S10 or STS shifter or something... But I don't. So I won't. lol

I wonder if I can get a cool ricer shifter handle offin' eBay for it or something? Razz

OK, so to whore up my own thread... Wink

It needed rear upper strut mounts. So I found some on eBay for a closeout price of 14 bucks each. Woot! Ordered. Then I get to thinking... What if the struts don't come apart without ruining them? So I go to rockauto... Gabriel rear struts on clearance, 26 bucks each! Woot! Ordered. So then I'm thinking, now... what about the fronts? Shit. Rockauto has em, Gabriel again, on clearance for 15 bucks! Wewt! Ordered! So now I'm thinking... Shoot, this thing has almost 130K on the worn out original springs... With new struts, maybe I can make it drive and look a little nicer... So there's ST lowering springs on eBay (1.2" lower all around) for 99 bucks for the SET of 4! On clearance! I *almost* ordered them... Should I? Or am I getting in too deep here? lol

With new struts, maybe I can make it drive and look a little nicer... So there's ST lowering springs on eBay (1.2" lower all around) for 99 bucks for the SET of 4! On clearance! I *almost* ordered them... Should I? Or am I getting in too deep here? lol

It'll up the resale value! And look better when you convert it to rear drive...
