Wheel stud/lug nut question Empty
PostSubject: Wheel stud/lug nut question   Wheel stud/lug nut question EmptySun Sep 02, 2012 10:37 pm

Hey guys,

Quick question. I finally have the whole Hotchkis suspension installed on my car and am waiting for the tires to be delivered this week (tuesday/wed hopefully). When the new rubber goes on I am taking it over for an alignment and all that stuff, but boy is it fun to drive, even with my driveway alignment now. Corners flat as a mother, rides great, and is generally a riot.

Anyway, I am putting 17" Cragar Soft 8 wheels on the car with the 9C1 style center caps that are similar to the ones used on trucks of the era (you know the ones where the lugs have the little plastic caps that retain the actual center cap).

I need to buy the threaded lug nuts that receive the plastic caps to hold the center caps on and I am wondering if there were any wheel stud changes made over the B-body production years from my "boxy" era 1987 to the later year (1990s) cars. I am trying to determine what lug nuts I need to buy and I'm seeing some that are 1/2-20 thread and others that are a metric thread.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks!

Boy am I lame. So I was able to (shockingly) solve my own inquiry. My wife always tells me I am helpless...this will show her!

Anyway, if you are at all interested, there was a change from 1/2-20 studs to the Metric stuff after the 1990 MY it seems. The good news is that Dorman part # 611-178 -- is a 1/2-20 thread lug with the external threads for the retainer caps.

Now I can sleep tonight. Smile

Good info. Glad you found out what you needed.

Matt Trakker(smith) did that lug nut/ center cap on his '93 caprice. I'm sure he's got the thread specs saved somewhere (at least for comparison)

The threads for 90's caprice/impala is M12 1.25 I just re-studded the caddy to 5x5.5 bolt pattern and used caprice studs. (fwb is probably the same).

I thought the center caps on rallies were held with screws? What does the lugs have to do with the caps???

Double check the compatibility on those nuts.

I got bit by that one, it turns out there is more than one size OUTside thread on the various lug nuts.

Then there are different sized black plastic "barrels" to match the larger or smaller holes in the center caps.

Dorman DOES seem to have all the styles of OEM external threaded lug nuts & plastic cap nuts, but nobody has specialy made available "adaptor-nuts" to allow us to use let's say a G-10 center cap, a S-10 plastic cap-nut with a C-10 lug nut securing a 9C1 wheel on an ARP 1/2"x20tpi racing stud.

Double check all your fitment parameters!

My research is already two years old, so post results if you find parts to allow us to mount late style 9C1 caps and wheels on 5X5 1/2"X20 or 14mm HD studs!

Hey guys,

The caps I am using are the truck style ones so not the exact correct 9C1 type, should have clarified that. I believe the 9C1 caps were bolted to the wheels.

On the lug cap front, Dorman part # 611-611 is the cap that will fit the lug nuts I wrote about above. I am going to take one of the caps I have that came with the center caps to the parts store to see if they'll fit and save me 40 bucks in little plastic pieces.

When I put the truck style on my RMW I didnt want to use the black plastic (which fit), I wanted the chrome (smaller OD) so I just punched a bunch of aluminum washers & painted them black to disappear. Cant see them when installed & secures properly.

When I did this, I had saved the eBay auctions and also the sizes of what I bought, but the auction links expired and what I'd written down was lost when I reformatted my computer-

I used the 92-98 Chevy truck caps which were NOS on eBay and came with the black lug covers in the bag. The lug covers provided were too big of an inner diameter to screw onto the outer lugnut threads, which required the other chrome caps. The caps came on C5 Corvettes and I think some Monte Carlos or something like that?

The OD of the "car" lug covers is smaller and at first glance appears like they won't work, but once they are all screwed on the lips hold like a son of a gun, they definitely won't fly off.

I'll see if I can dig up what I got, the lugnuts I think were actually cheaper on eBay...I know you can get the lug covers needed for the mod from a junkyard and grind them down a little so they fit inside of the stock Chevy truck lug covers, then glue them inside... Very Happy

These are the lug nut covers...you can also get them in black if you wanted. Don't know if that works for the box bodies though.

The lugs I used were 12MM x 1.5 I think?

^^^ Good stuff and a great solution!

I took the easy way out and bought 20 of the 611-178 Dorman lugs along with 20 of a 611-611 caps. That PN is a 1/2-20 threaded lug nut and the caps are the matched PN to those nuts. I usually like figuring my way out of stuff rather than spending, but I didn't want to sweat lug nuts and plastic caps any more. Smile

The Mickey Thompson Street Comps should be here in a couple days, hopefully before I leave for Drag Week. I want to get the wheels on the car with the tires on. Looks great with the new stance. Total moonshine runner look going now.
