Oil starvation and breakdown (Change that oil) Empty
PostSubject: Oil starvation and breakdown (Change that oil)   Oil starvation and breakdown (Change that oil) EmptyFri Jul 13, 2012 7:46 am

Ok. For the past three years, I have been at a loss as to why I lost two motors in a month. I think I now know exactly what happened.
Of coarse this is just my take on it. It is not written in stone. Jason actually got me rethinking about this on my way home from Bill's this past sunday. I made three mistakes that I want to share so this does not happen to others.

Original engine.
Mistake one: Change oil when you purchase a new car. I purchased a car, and did not change the oil right away. I then took the car to the track, and wiped out #7 rod bearing. Again, this only my opinion. I think what happened was the oil was old dirty, and it's viscosity had broken down to the point, that under normal driving condition, it could still do it's job. But when I ran the engine at very high RPMs for a 1/4 mile 4 times, the oil could no longer do it's job, and failed to lubricate the engine. Still not sure why number seven was wiped out instead of number one or number 2 unless I also got a piece of debris that made its's way through the filter media, and then it would explain why one of the first rod bearings to see lubrication was wiped out. And oil starvation from a clogged filter is possible as well.

Replacement engine
Mistake two and three: did not keep the engine clean, and did not change oil after initial start up on the replacement engine. This is more simple. When you re gasket an engine. It is very important to keep any debris out of the engine. and after running it for a short time, change the oil and filter again before going to high rpm's, this will allow any debris to get suspended in the oil, and make their way back to the filter. I really think debris took this engine out.

I am hoping that my stupid mistakes can be avoided by others.
If you purchase a new to you car, CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER.

If you install a used/junk yard engine and replace all gaskets and seals (good idea by the way), make sure to KEEP DEBRIS OUT OF ENGINE, AND CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER AGAIN AFTER INITIAL START UP.

The first oil change is a great idea as you will know right away if it has hidden problems (like a coolant leak).
BTW, like the side pipe on the tractor Smile

Arrow

..... Even new cars 2012 models, don't always leave the lot full of oil.

.....Think about it, if a 2012 car is built in 07/2011 but doesn't get sold until 06/2012 , that's a full year of sitting, winter cold starts and shut off's for snow removal, a few test drives, people revving the rmp's up to 4k and shutting if off cause they are stoopid, and if your really lucky it's a swapped in vehicle that was just punished on 25- 100 mile test drive. Don't ask how I know Twisted Evil
