Does anyone have experience with metal epoxies?

I'm thinking about doing an "art" project using old license plates, but I would need to attach them with a weld-like bond. Anyone familiar with products that might work?

I'd like to grab something tomorrow, so a brand and type of store that might carry it is a plus...I have no clue...

JB Weld is the ultimate best in my book. AZone carries it.
Cures like metal filler.
Can be worked just like metal.
They have a quick set type which I'd recommend for that application.
Otherwise you'll walk away with one design & return to another.
It is gray tho...dont know if that matters.
I once filled a groove being cut in an axle by a cheap sitdown lawnmower wheel.
Filled it, ground it back to original axle dim's....outlived the rest of the mower.
Most epoxies (quickset) nowadays will do what you want if there's not a ton of weight.

Easy enough, I considered JB weld, but it just seemed too obvious...lol

JB Weld seconded. But, "Quiksteel" is easier to work with, you just kinda roll the rod of it together to mix the two, and then mold it how you want, then it sets up.

I've seen a JB Weld version of Quiksteel, so I don't know if they got bought out or what. It's like a plastic tube on a bubble card and works kind of the same way as JB.

No TIG welder?

Robbins or Napa sell Body seal. It is what is found in most cars to seal out moisture, or they have panel glue. That is strong stuff. Chevrolet first used it on the then new 93 F-body instead of welds in certain spots.

PC*7. It's a metal filled epoxy that looks like metal when cured, you can file it, sand it, and drill it. Comes in two seperate small cans. Available at most hardware stores. -Joe

^I've heard good things about that stuff, I was gonna try it to form some new quarter panel patches for my Caprice.

There are several to choose from, so you'll have to read up on what formulation is best for your application.

You could use double sided automotive tape from 3M. Would work awesome.

I scored some TC-7 today to test out, pretty reasonably priced for a test, $5 or so. I like the sounds of it because it sounds like, once it sets, if there is any residual you can sand and paint it just like metal.

If it doesn't fit my needs I will start digging into the panel adhesives that Bill and Jay were mentioning.

This will be an "art" project, once it is done it will be framed, so there will be no real stress or movement involved, but I still want it to be "One piece" when I'm done.

I'll be starting a test tonight of a B-body, made up of probably about 6 plates including 2 that were once on my 94 Impala. I plan to paint the plates used for the car BBB and then use unpainted Vermont plates as a hillside background and a yet-to-be-determined blue/white plate as a a sky background. I'm not wild about the wood background in this guys work, and I thought "The more plates the better"

That TC7 worked really well, had a long tack-time and cured overnight. I have several plates epoxied together and I can lift it by one plate and swing it around. I'm thinking I could probably pull them apart if I tried hard enough, but I'm impressed with how it has set so far. It also calls for a 24 hour cure time, so it might firm up even more by tonight.

I have a printout cut and taped together of a 4 foot long Impala. I plan to trace this onto the glued together plates tonight and and start cutting out the main design. This is proving to be a TON of work, but also quite fun. I can understand how the guy above wants $1300 for that truck picture...I have at least 3 hours in this already and the plates are not even done gluing.

I found the 3rd vanity plate I had on the 94 Impala, so my design will have all 3 plates that the 94 wore when I was driving it...I'm pumped. I'll get a couple pics tonight and put them up tomorrow for those interested.

Good call Steve, CT plates would be perfect for the sky. It would be cool to keep it to New England plates for this one.

TC7 has worked great, however for how much I am using it is kid of time consuming to work with.

I figured since the subject has pretty much changed here that I would create a new thread for the license plate car and essentially close this one out.
