Question on coolant light/reservoir Empty
PostSubject: Question on coolant light/reservoir    Question on coolant light/reservoir EmptySat Jun 23, 2012 7:57 am

This is probably a remedial question but.…….

Today on the way home from work at 7am (65* outside) the low coolant light comes on in the black caddy, I didn't think nothing of it, assuming it was from the nose being slammed to the ground while the back was up.

Well when I pulled in the driveway the reservoir was boiling and pissing out from under the cap!
Gut instinct went to thermostat.... But wouldn't I get a temp light??
Is there a "common" lt1 issue here?
This is the first real problem this car has had. So I'd like to get it squared away ASAP.

Any way to diagnose without taking anything apart yet?

Anyone have a thought???

If it was boiling you have a leak in the system. Usually the cap craps out. Try replacing the cap, and burping the system, then let cool and top off. I have had this happen a couple times over the years.

Makes sense since the low coolant light was on. Besides the cap is there another common spot for a leak to form? I'm praying for it to not be the water pump or heater core.

I am sure it is the cap. If you have ever unscrewed the cap while hot, you will notice the coolant will boil up in the reservoir. If you have a failing cap, it will hold some pressure long enough for the engine to warm up, then let go under pressure. When this happens you get the boil until the temp and pressure drops. See if the cap is loose. If not swap out with the green caddy, and check it again.

Definitely think it's the cap, I filled the bucket with plain ol water and started the car, let it run a bit and them put the cap back on, it started trickling down the side of the bucket from the cap.
2 things still have me confused,

1. After filling the bucket to the top and turning the car on, the low coolant light was still on.
2. I can feel good flow through the small heater hoses good into the WP, but no flow in the large hoses or anything coming out of the bleeder (is this just from the pressure/heat not building enough to open up the thermostat?)

1) Sometimes you have to tap the coolant reservior after a low coolant light...gets stuck
2) If the cars up to temp & no bleed coolant= stuck thermostat (I've squeezed the hose hard a couple times & had the thermostat open
When I was reading it I was thinking, maybe it didnt burp right due to high azz & low nose
Try parking nose up. I always bring it up to temp...shut it off...bleed & repeat

Thanks for the parts BTW Arrow

*****(WARNING: UNSAFE)*****
How I burp the system now, and unless you know what you are doing, DON'T DO IT! I get the car up to full operational temperature, and engine running, park nose up on slight incline and crack the cap till you hear the boil, then tighten it again, and wait one minute, and repeat. This will draw air pockets to the reservoir, and burp the system. I only do this to keep hot coolant off the PIA to get to Opti.
