| avoid heavy duty engine degreasers then? the top end of the car is a mess. valve covers are thick black oily crusty nastiness. Lots of garbage in the intake valley too. | |

| Oh ok. I've always avoided using engine cleaners because 1) they're pretty harsh and 2) because I've never had an engine that was horribly dirty
this car looks like it went for a swim in mud

| I use super purple or the purple clean from wal mart, get a spray bottle and start misting, hot engine is best. I use a small wire bristle brush, denture stiff bristle tooth brush or the like to get all the gunk penetrated and loosened. Keep spraying as you go. It's a good idea you put a kiddie pool or large flat tote underneath the engine to catch oil/grease. I then place plastic drop cloths (walmart paint section) over the windshield and fenders and power wash the snot outta her..... Do not spray directly on the opti, PCM, or coil on full blast, give it another spray down with purple and a quick once over in any trouble areas. Rinse with hose or power wash again. Park it in the sun with the hood open. check wire connections and spark plug wires for any that came loose, should be good!! | |

| http://www.s100.com/s100_tcc.htm That stuff is AWESOME! Spray on. Let sit. Hose off. Clean and low sheen when dry. Done. You can get it at just about any motorcycle dealer or shop. | |

| If you really want to clean something good, remove it. Remove, clean, replace. I try not to use water on my motors. Just on the core support/ wheel wells. What I dont want to remove I spray with an APC, scrub a little with a brush, and wipe. before after | |

| I always did mine with the engine running and up to temp. That way the water evaporates faster. Never had an issue. | |

| ^I usually do that, and try not to nail the alternator or electrical stuff with the hose. A lot of my cars have been uh, less sensitive than an Opti-equipped vehicle though, so YMMV. I always used Simple Green, a brush, and a bucket of water for real greasy dirty stuff. | |

| If you don't have an air compressor use a leaf blower, they're cheap. | |

| did the first round of it last night. boy, does that engine degreaser smell. I'll need to go at it again eventually. I need to get an air compressor to get rid of all the nut shells around the intake manifold. I dug a few out with my fingers. | |

| I watched Fred clean a wagon at WagonFest a few years ago.
Paul, was that your wagon?
Anyway, he just used a hose, dish soap, and a scrub brush. Didn't disconnect anything, didn't avoid any specific spots, and it worked like a charm. He said this was how he cleaned all the wagons he bought.
